Police seek man in theft case

Nesquehoning Police are looking for a borough man who is wanted in connection with stealing money from his aunt in May.

Officers issued a felony warrant for Michael Atkinson, 25, of 12 E. Columbus Ave. on June 22.According to the affidavit, on May 22, officer Richard Neikam was approached by Anita Straubinger and her sister, Mary Feinsilber, who wanted to report a theft.Upon speaking with the sisters, Neikam was told that Straubinger noticed when she was checking her bank statement that morning that there were three transactions totaling $709.59 that she did not authorize. She explained that the day before, she let her nephew, identified as Atkinson, take her debit card and withdraw $300 from the ATM and stop at the borough office to pay her water/sewer bill, but the other three charges that she found, she said she did not allow him to make. The first unauthorized transaction occurred at the Turkey Hill PNC Bank ATM in the amount of $501.75; the second and third were made at Redner's Warehouse Market in the amount of $105.19 and $102.65.Straubinger said she has not seen her nephew since and he will now not pick up his phone when she tries calling him.Neikam contacted Redner's corporate office and Turkey Hill about the transactions and asked for the camera footage from the times of the transactions. On May 13, police received footage from Turkey Hill, but were unable to clearly locate Atkinson in the video. On May 16, Neikam again contacted Straubinger, who told Neikam that she was contacted by Atkinson and he said he was sorry, but he owed a lot of people money. At that time, Straubinger revealed that Atkinson was a heroin addict and believed he might possibly be in rehab somewhere. Two weeks later, Neikam received the footage from the transactions at Redner's and asked Straubinger to identify the man in the footage. Officer Timothy Wuttke, who had dealings with Atkinson in the past, was able to positively identify the man in the footage as Atkinson.Straubinger said she had received a Facebook message from Atkinson, and she believes he was living with friends in Tamaqua.Neikam then contacted Tamaqua police to ask if they could make contact with Atkinson. To date, neither Nesquehoning nor Tamaqua police have been able to make contact with Atkinson. He is charged with accessing a device issued to another who did not authorize the use and identity theft.Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Atkinson is asked to call Nesquehoning Police at 570-669-9111.
