County gets $50K for upgrades

Carbon County is receiving $50,000 to replace old electrical panels and wiring and an old fire alarm system at the Old Mauch Chunk Train Station.

On Thursday, the commissioners voted to approve the agreement with the Commonwealth Financing Agency for the $50,000 Local Share Account grant for the electrical renovations. The county had applied for just under $100,000 in LSA money, which is generated through gaming funds collected at the casino in Monroe County.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the county will now work to hire an electrical engineer to draw up the specs for the project and will then put it out for bid.The grant is good until June 30, 2018.This is one of several major renovation project the county has worked on in the train station in recent years. In 2011, the county replaced the sidewalks and installed wrought iron fencing around the train station and in Josiah White Park, as well as constructed ADA curb ramps and resurfaced a parking lot near the train station at a cost of $114,114.14.In 2013, the county renovated the visitor center restrooms at a cost of $99,250; as well as spent $17,760 to complete masonry restoration on the exterior of the building. In 2014, the visitors center was closed so it could receive a face-lift.The $12,300 project involved repairing and refinishing floors, reconfiguring the current help desk layout, painting, installing video kiosks and updating brochure racks. The county also recently finished replacing the lights around the windows of the station with LED lights at a cost of $19,000.Money for the projects either came from the parking fund, which is generated from parking fees paid by visitors when they park in the county-owned parking lot, or through state funds like the LSA grant.
