Rush repairing roads

Rush Township will spend $46,590 to rent heavy equipment and operators, plus about $51,000 in materials, to repair major segments of roads.

Troppe Contracting of Pottsville was the lone bidder for the heavy equipment and operators rental, which includes pavers, rollers, excavators and other pieces of equipment, plus operators to run them. The cost is figured by the hour per each piece of equipment. Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said that the township has been contracting for the work for five years.Roads slated for repair include Wayne and Cumberland avenues, a portion of Tide Road, and Jones, Joyce, Ridge, Center and South streets. Leibensperger said that the township contracts out for repairs that involve "major segments of roads that need repairs to their base." Township employees handle patching and other repairs. The supervisors applied for $80,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding, which would be used for repair of a sewer line, plus laterals to houses, on Hometown Avenue and part of Miller Street. The existing terra cotta line needs repairs. The supervisors approved applications for two grants for the police department, one for a body camera, and one for equipment, through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program. The JAG program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. Leibensperger will make the grant applications.
