Heath Trial Day 3: 'I know I did something bad'

As the Anthony Heath trial enters the third day, jurors watched a video taped interview Feb. 5. 2014, in Kinston, North Carolina. He told troopers he talked to Angela Steigerwalt after she had already been killed and said he is bipolar.

In the interview, Anthony Darrell Heath tells troopers he last saw Steigerwalt between 10 p.m. and midnight Friday, Jan 31.

That's when, he says, she dropped off her car for him to drive to North Carolina to visit his brother at Camp Lejeune.

Heath is accused of killing Steigerwalt, 35, of Tamaqua, stuffing her body into a tote, and setting it on fire, before taking her car to North Carolina.

He spoke with her Saturday afternoon, Feb. 1, and via text on Sunday morning, Feb. 2, Heath said.

He told troopers they were friends who had occasional intimate moments.

His story changed to say he was also scouting places for them to live because she wanted out of an abusive marriage.

Heath emphasized they were "not a couple."

In the video, Tpr. Joseph Campbell confronts Heath with photos of him shopping for a tote, lighter fluid and lighter in Walmart at around dawn Feb.1.

"Is there some reason you picked these up?" he asks Heath.

"I don't recall, sir," Heath answers.

In videotaped interview, Campbell confronts Heath on his claims to have talked with Steigerwalt Saturday and Sunday "when I already witnessed her deceased."

In the interview, Heath claims to have blacked out and awakened 45 minutes later to find Steigerwalt dead, a cord around her neck.

He had his phone and "considered calling 911. But a picture of my kids came into my head."

He recalled the shopping trip to buy items to "cover up."

"I know I did something bad." Heath said.

Heath also told troopers he has been diagnosed with "bipolar mix" and was under the care of a psychiatrist.

Troopers told him they talked with his father, who said he was never diagnosed with anything.

He then admitted to troopers he and Angela argued about the custody hearing.

He also tells troopers. "I'm not a bad person, but I have bad tendencies."
