Fun and learning at math and science camp

Panther Valley Elementary School is holding a math and science camp this week for its students going into fourth grade.

The camp began on Monday and will conclude on Friday. It is being overseen by Panther Valley Elementary teachers Mindy Penberth and Amber Forster, who have been in charge of it for the past five years."We try to hold the camp shortly after the school year ends because the kids are still in school mode. We like to keep it more relaxed and fun," Penberth said.Funded by the Panther Valley Foundation, along with grants this year, the school has held the camp for about 20 years for students who have an interest in science and mathematics. The children get to learn about and do activities involving nature, weather, space, and more.Thirty-four students were in attendance for Tuesday's camp, including Stephen Hood, age 9."I'm having a lot of fun. My favorite part so far was making dirt pudding," Hood said. The students watched a video about the butterfly's cycle of life, then made crafts to show what they had learned. They later got the chance to go outside and start making their own volcanoes out of papier-m'ché after learning about landforms and natural disasters."Both of us volunteered years ago to run the camp and we've been doing it every summer ever since. It's a lot of fun for us and the students," Forster said.
