Police announce results of DUI patrols

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional DUI Enforcement Program has released the results of roving DUI patrols and a sobriety checkpoint held during the first two weekends in June in Schuylkill County.

A sobriety checkpoint was held Friday in Mahanoy Township. A total of 732 vehicles were contacted with 32 being detained. Of the five drivers tested for possibly driving under the influence, four adults were charged with DUI. Officers also made five traffic arrests, wrote five seat belt citations, made four criminal arrests and issued 19 warnings. The checkpoint was staffed by nine officers representing six police departments.On June 6, three officers from three departments conducted roving DUI patrols. A total of 18 vehicles were contacted and detained, with three adults arrested for driving drunk. Officers also made 13 traffic and two criminal arrests.Officers were also out on June 5, contacting 15 vehicles and drivers. One adult was arrested for driving under the influence. The two officers issued 13 traffic citations, made one criminal arrest and issued four warnings.DUI enforcement efforts will continue to be conducted through June 22 on routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 1006, 309, 443, 895, 125, 25, 924 and 54.The checkpoints and patrols are funded through the state Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.Motorists are reminded to dial 911 if they suspect a drunken driver.
