Mustangs blank Towamensing
Clutch hitting and clutch pitching has been known to win a baseball game or two over the years. Unfortunately, for the Towamensing Yankees they only were only able to produce one of those essential ingredients on Wednesday.
Towamensing pitcher Ty Achterman and East Stroudsburg pitcher Nolan Schuster both pitched great ball games, but it was Schuster who was able to pitch the Mustangs to a 1-0 Keystone Babe Ruth victory. From the onset, this game had the feel of a pitching duel. Both Achterman and Schuster were doing a fine job of retiring batters without using a ton of pitches. In fact, for the first four innings of play neither team was able to put a run on the board."Both pitchers really had great outings today, said Towamensing coach Don Hunter. "They were just able to string a few hits together when they had scoring opportunities and we couldn't. That's what we need to work on moving forward because our pitching has been pretty decent."In the fifth, the Mustangs were finally able to bring a run across after not converting when they had a man on third basewith two outs in each of the three previous innings. The action started with Matt Williams, who roped a double down the left field line. Then Damani Wright stepped to the plate. Wright made a few nice defensive plays in center field on the day, chasing down balls that many other players wouldn't be able to get to.Wright then made his presence known offensively, as he belted a shot to center field that bounced and hit against the fence. Wright's speed carried him to third on the play and Williams scored easily."I was just looking fastball and I got one," said Wright. "I was able to get a good piece of the ball and it carried pretty far out there. It was just a great feeling to be able to help my team in that situation. I knew that if I got a hit somewhere in the gap out there that Matt (Williams) would be able to score because of his speed."Williams, who reached base twice out of his four plate appearances was proud of the way his team battled throughout the day."This is always a tough a team and they won the championship last year, so it's great to get a win on the road like this," said Williams. "This is the second time we've beat them now, we just have to keep playing good baseball and keep our momentum going."Schuster, who gave up four hits and struck out six, took care of the rest, shutting down the Yankees in the sixth and seventh inning."This is a great bunch of kids and they've been playing very hard this summer," said Mustangs coach Tony Croce. "Today's win was a total team effort and also a great win for us. Towamensing is always a good team and a classy team. We always enjoy playing them."For Towamensing, Owen Miller led the Yankees with two singles on the day.Achterman gave up just three hits and one run in a very solid pitching performance for Towamensing.East Strouds. 000 010 0 - 1 3 0Towamensing 000 000 0 - 0 4 0Schuster and Williams; Miller and Achterman.
