Northern Lehigh tables track upgrade contract

Northern Lehigh School District has slammed the brakes on a plan to renovate the track around Bulldog Stadium.

By a 6-3 measure, the school board on Monday agreed to table an agreement with Nagle Athletic Surfaces for renovation of the track around the stadium at a cost of up to $600,000.Those who voted not to table the matter were directors Mathias Green, Raymond Follweiler, and Robert Keegan Jr.Contacted Tuesday, Greg Derr, director of support services and transportation, said the agreement was tabled "until further scope of the work can be drawn up."Derr said the surface is a latex running track, and areas have worn thin and are delaminating to the point where the old lines underneath are coming through."They are not installing latex tracks anymore," Derr said. "There is newer and better technology for tracks that makes them more durable and impervious to water."The track was last resurfaced in 2009, said Derr, who added the district was aware back then that the thickness of the track would allow for one more resurfacing."And, at this point, we got the five years they said we would out of it," he said. "It's to the point where it's coming apart and delaminating."However, in a related matter, the board did authorize administration to allow ELA Sport to contract with an engineering firm to perform core drilling of the track around the stadium at a cost not to exceed $4,500.The core drilling will allow for a full inspection of the 20-plus year asphalt on the track, and further provide for a complete project cost presentation at the board's committee meetings in August. In August 2012, the district held the dedication of the turf field, which cost $770,000 and includes an artificial surface, scoreboard, and security system. In other business, the board:• Awarded insurance coverage for the 2015-16 school year to Commercial Package and Automobile (vehicle liability, general liability property insurance and boiler and machinery) Graphic Arts National Insurance Company in the amount of $77,445. The premium represents an increase of $2,721 over last year's rate.• Awarded insurance coverage for the 2015-16 school year to Commercial Umbrella Liability Insurance-North River Insurance Company for $17,318. There is no premium increase from last year's rate.• Awarded insurance coverage for the 2015-16 school year to School Leaders Error and Omissions Liability-National Union Fire Insurance Company for $30,598. The premium represents an increase of $891 over last year's rates.• Appointed School District's Insurance Consortium as the district's Workers' Compensation carrier for the 2015-16 school year for $91,593, which represents about a $5,406 increase. This amount is an estimated total; the final cost is based on actual payroll figures.
