Breaker Boys advance to GEFA Championship

Despite losing its final regular season contest against the Schuylkill County Predators two weeks ago, the Panther Valley Breaker Boys clinched a spot in the Great Eastern Football Association postseason and earned a rematch with the Predators last Saturday in the first round.

Panther Valley lost by just two points in the regular season bout, and the playoff affair was equally competitive. With the game tied at 14-14 and just two ticks left on the clock, PV star quarterback Brock Mitchell found Damian Lewis alone in the end zone for the historic game-winning touchdown. The playoff victory marks the team's first-ever postseason win, and clinched its first ever trip to the conference finals against Mount Joy this coming weekend."Brock Mitchell is one of the best (quarterbacks) in the league," said Lewis who is Mitchell's favorite target. "Brock and I have been best friends since we were around six years old. We grew up together and the trust we have in each other is phenomenal."Mitchell and his offense made a few offensive adjustments at the line of scrimmage before the final play, which caused a pair of Predator defenders to both jump a slant route over the middlewhich in result, left Lewis open in the end zone.Lewis said, "It was bittersweet playing in another close game. I felt like we should have won by much more, they were already in playoff mode the previous week when we lost (in the regular season). I was so wide open that the hardest part at the point was actually catching the ball. I have to give all the credit in the world to Brock, he made that play happen."PV's defense has been tenacious down the stretch, allowing just six points over the past two games."We're riding a defensive high heading into the conference finals against the defending champs (Mount Joy)," explained Panther Valley head coach Rick Lash."We had some costly turnovers last week and we can't afford to give a team like Mount Joy extra opportunities. Everyone runs good routes on this team. We might not be the fastest on the field, but we run better routes then the other teams we've faced."The Breaker Boys will travel to Mount Joy on Saturday and will have a 3 p.m. kickoff. Panther Valley finished right behind Mount Joy in the Valley Conference, as the Cyclones finished the regular season with 9-1 overall record."We'll talk among ourselves to try and figure out a solid game plan," said Lash. "I know the Mount Joy guys from my previous coaching experiences. Ultimately, the guys on the field will determine the outcome of the game. I try to help them on and off the field and guide them. This is a family and no one man is above the team. When they believe that, they're tough to beat. Do not be surprised if you hear the Breaker Boys win the game this weekend."
