Man gets prison term for escape

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term in the county court after pleading guilty to escape, theft from a motor vehicle and retail theft.

Aaron Jason Scott Jr., 24, of Lehighton, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of 12 to 18 months in a state correctional institution.Scott was charged with escape and theft from a motor vehicle for an incident on April 30 in Jim Thorpe. Borough police responded to the county parking lot along Lehigh Street for a report of theft from a vehicle. A woman reported her car was entered and her purse taken. Scott was found in the area, and while being questioned by police he fled on foot toward the Lehigh River. He was later apprehended. The retail theft incident occurred at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township on June 22, 2013. He was scheduled to go on trial this week on the charge but instead entered a plea. He pleaded to the first set of charges Thursday, but sentencing was delayed because he decided to plead to the retail theft count rather than go to trial.Nanovic sentenced him to serve one to 12 months on the escape, six to 18 months on the theft, and one to 12 months on the retail theft with all the terms running concurrently. However, Nanovic ruled the counts would run consecutive to a state prison term Scott is currently serving out of Lehigh County.Nanovic also ordered Scott to get a drug and alcohol evaluaton and follow any recommendation for treatment, make total restitution of $565.53, and pay court costs of about $1,000.
