NW's Shackleton will be a Hoosier

Northwestern senior Trey Shackleton has been one of the top and more decorated swimmers the Lehigh Valley has seen in recent memory.

In his final high school season, Shackleton earned two top-four finishes at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, including a silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle. As a three-time Times News Swimmer of the Year, that performance capped a career that includes four district gold medals and three medals at states. His high school career may have come to an end, but Shackleton will continue swimming at the Division I collegiate level for the next four years. Shackleton, who recently committed to Indiana University, was one of 10 Tigers who were honored during a ceremonial signing at Northwestern High School on Wednesday afternoon."I'm super excited to move onto college from high school," Shackleton said. "It's a big difference, and I'm excited to take my training to the next level."While he got to compete against some of the top swimmers in Pennsylvania year after year, he'll take an even bigger step over the next four. That begins with the Indiana coaching staff, which includes three distance coaches that have succeeded at the top level in the world."The coaching staff was fantastic," Shackleton said. "Just for distance alone, three of the coaches have been on the national team."Obviously these guys have the experience, and they know what you're going through. That really helps them coach you."He earned plenty of praise as a Tiger, and a number of Division I schools had interest in Shackleton. Michigan State University, Georgetown University and Army were at the top of his list, too.But when it came down to it, the combination of athletics and academics at Indiana swayed Shackleton's decision."I thought it was going to be more difficult than it was," Shackleton said. "When it came down to it after I took all of my recruiting trips, I just really knew it was the place for me."The pool certainly didn't make his decision any tougher either."The pool was beautiful," Shackleton said. "It is one of the best pools I've ever seen. I'm really excited to train in there every day.""The team is really great. I really liked the guys. I seemed to really fit in and get along with them."Shackleton plans to major in Exercise Science and pursue med school in the future. His plans are to become a doctor after school.Trey's parents are Herbert and Elena Shackleton.
