Container gardening

Penn State Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County will present a session on container gardening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 11 at First United Church of Christ, Route 61, Schuylkill Haven.The master gardeners will explain the ins and outs of growing, herbs, vegetables and flowers in containers for your porch and patio. Correct planting techniques, proper pot sizes and the correct potting mix will all be discussed.Participants will leave with a better idea of how to use containers, fresh ideas and some potting soil.There is no fee, but preregistration is required. Call 570-622-4225, ext. 13, to register or for more information.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its annual anniversary dinner May 26 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville. There were 63 members in attendance. The meal was provided by A and C Catering.Roger Walck and Phil Price were added to the sick list.Upcoming events include a June 10 trip to Knoebels Grove; July 28, annual picnic, noon, St. Peter's Grove in Locust Valley.The group meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Reading takes to the roadThe public libraries in Schuylkill County have joined forces to take readers on a "road trip" by offering story time sessions every Friday at the Boscov's in the Fairlane Village Mall.The sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the community auditorium, with a kick-off event on June 13. The kick-off's theme will be "Lego Extravaganza."Zion's Stone ChurchThe J.P. McCaskey High School Chamber Choir, from Lancaster, will be special musical guests at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion's Stone Church, West Penn Township. The choir is under the direction of Tim Sterner, a former member of Zion's. The special a cappella event is part of Zion's yearlong 225th anniversary celebration.On June 7, the worship service will be from the "old Lutheran red book," the Service Book and Hymnal, 1963, Setting One. The service will include Holy Communion.The public is welcome.Calvary EvangelicalTerry Gerber will lead the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include graduate recognition. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.An hour of praise and prayer is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
