Lansford remembers veterans

In his address to those present during Memorial Day services held at Kennedy Park in Lansford, Richard D. Pogwist, past commander for the Lansford American Legion Post 123 and master of ceremonies, took a moment to point out the patriotic display located at Hiles Brothers in Summit Hill which displays two simple words, "We remember."

"This Memorial Day as we gather for what typically signals the beginning of the summer season, I ask you to stop and remember the real reason for this holiday," Pogwist said."On this day we should take time out and pay tribute to the men and women who fell in the line of duty. When they fell to preserve our freedom, someone felt the tremendous loss of a parent, child, brother, sister or friend."He also said that each was a "hero and a patriot."Pogwist reminded those present to always "appreciate the blessings of freedom, recognize the depth of sacrifice and pay tribute to those who unselfishly gave their all on behalf of our freedom."Guest speaker and Iraq and Afghanistan veteran Air Force Staff Sgt. Nathan Krajcirik delivered a sometimes emotional address to the crowd noting that Memorial Day was not about him or any of the vets present during the ceremony."Today is about the ones who didn't come home," Krajcirik said.He then read a poem by Lawrence Vaincourt called "Just a common soldier (A soldier died today)."In closing, Krajcirik said, "We live in a time where they're more worried about some deflated footballs than the fallen that we lose in Afghanistan, and that's atrocious. But for all of you here that know the true meaning of Memorial Day, I am very grateful and very thankful."During the service, Panther Valley High School JROTC member Hannah Hill read Logan's General Order. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was read by Zachary Gilbert.Brooke Turner read "In Flanders Field" by John McCrae. The invocation and benediction was given by the Rev. Jeremy Benack and the national anthem was sung by Angela Nardini.Andrew Shaker read the roll call of deceased veterans since Memorial Day 2014.The Panther Valley High School band performed patriotic music during the ceremony and the JROTC provided a rifle salute to the deceased.
