Vikings blank Marian

ORWIGSBURG - The way the Marian-Tri-Valley District 11 Class A softball semifinal at Blue Mountain's Patton field began, it looked like it would be one heck of a pitcher's duel between the Fillies' Bethany Shaud and the Vikings' Taryn Wilson.

Both pitchers were riding the strike zone and had some great defense behind them. Unfortunately for the Fillies (15-8), the Vikings pushed across nine runs in their final two at bats and rode the untouchable pitching of Wilson, who threw a perfect game for a 10-0 five inning win in a contest that lasted just one hour and nine minutes. She also became Tri-Valley's single season winningest pitcher with 20 wins. The victory lifted Tri-Valley (20-2) into Tuesday's championship game back at Patton Field (6 p.m.) against No 2 seed Williams Valley, a 10-2 winner over Minersville in the opener of Thursday's twinbill.Wilson not only didn't allow a Marian batter to reach first base, it took her just 57 pitches to complete the gem. And 44 of them were strikes. She finished the night with 10 K's."She's (Wilson) a tough pitcher," said Marian head coach Joe DeAngelo. "We knew hits were going to be tough to come by."We hoped to keep it close for a while and we did. Bethany (Shaud) was pitching well. And then they got the bunt single and a couple of bleeders and it just snowballed from there."It was Megan Boyer's bunt single in the bottom of the third that ignited the fire that Tri-Valley needed to get its wheels turning. Boyer laid down a perfect bunt with one out, stole second and moved to third on an error. She broke for the plate when the ball got by Marian catcher Nicole Salerno with Brittany Geist at the plate, but Salerno raced back to get it and Bpyer found herself in a rundown. Salerno threw to third and Boyer flew home, sliding in ahead of the tag for a 1-0 lead.Three straight singles to start off the fourth inning gave the Vikings the big inning they needed and a bases clearing triple by Boyer to right field helped widen her team's advantage to 5-0.The offensive juggernaut of the Vikings continued in the fifth where they batted around to add five more runs to end it.Four more hits, sandwiched around an error, a wild pitch and stolen base gave Tri-Valley the win.Wendy Header, Taylor Header and Maddie Horn, the three batters at the top of the order, had an awesome outing for the Vikings. Taylor was two-for-three and scored two runs, while the others each added a hit and accounted for three more runs."In this sport, sometimes things look worse than they were and we gave them a battle for a while," DeAngelo said. "They are 20-2 for a reason, but we gave it a shot."Looking at the overall season, DeAngelo couldn't be more proud. The team was 6-5 at one point, but won nine of its last 12 games."I told the girls when you look at the entire year, we won another division championship, had 15 wins and got into the league and district semifinals, which included a big win over Mahanoy Area the other day (in the D-11 quarterfinals). That was my message," DeAngelo added. "I'm very proud of them."The future looks bright for the Fillies, who lose only three seniors (Bryanna Pearson, Alex Stroia and Shaud)."The more experience you get in this situation, the better you are down the line," the coach said.Marian 000 00 - 0 0 2Tri-Valley 001 45 - 10 10 0Shaud and Salerno; Wilson and Troutman.
