Achievement awards

The Tamaqua Area School District will hold its annual Achievement Awards ceremony on May 11 in the Tamaqua Area Middle School Auditorium.Doors to the auditorium will open at 5:15 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There is no admission fee.Approximately $150,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to students.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 28 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville with 50 members in attendance.The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Kathleen Valentine provided an inspirational reading, "Live Each Day For God." A moment of silence was observed in honor of Ada Robinson.One new member, Joan Ann Tuckett, was welcomed to the group. Birthday greetings were extended to Gladys Arner, Neal Flexer, Madaline Heffelfinger and Barbara Bower.May 12 is the group's trip to Penn's Peak, so there will not be a regular meeting. The next meeting will include the 37th anniversary dinner at noon May 26.Refreshments and social games were enjoyed after the business meeting. The group meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Library newsThe next Family Board Game Day at the Tamaqua Public Library will be held on May 16. All ages are welcome to bring their favorite board games to play between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.The library is located at 30 S. Railroad St. More information on library services is available at
