The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet at 7 p.m. May 13 at the community center at the South Ward Playground on Penn Street.The committee will be discussing reported problems and ways to improve the community.Anyone with a concern or idea for improvement is welcome to attend.Library book clubThe Tamaqua Public Library's next monthly book discussion for adults will be at 6 p.m. May 18.This month's selection is "A Touch of Stardust," written by Kate Alcott. The book offers a look at the turbulent times during the filming of the classic movie "Gone With The Wind."Set in 1939, Hollywood's "Golden Age," Alcott weaves together numerous facts from the time with a fictional character, Julie, who is a bit star-struck by the likes of Carole Lombard, Clark Gable and movie producer David O. Selznick. The tale follows Julie through her journey of love and trust in a world of glitz, glamour and brittle facades.Upcoming discussions will include; The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt on June 29 and Hide and Seek by fern Michaels on July 27.For more information about the book club, call 570-668-4660. The library is located at 30 S. Railroad St.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met April 30 at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.The meeting was attended by 60 members, with President Melody Weicker conducting the business session.Secretary Ruthann Feane provided an inspirational reading, "God Walks With Us." A guest speaker from Schuylkill Health Care attended and spoke of the services they provide.Birthday greetings were extended to members celebrating their special days in March and April: Sylvia Houseman, Verne Balliet, Shirley Shellhammer, Joan Deitrich, Madeline Heffelfinger, Pat Fredericks, Paul Rarick, Antoinette Triano, Gladys Arner and Brenda Zellers.The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Thursday. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Broad St.Everyone is welcome to attend.Calvary EvangelicalPastor Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.National Day of Prayer will be observed this Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at Steigerwalt's Church in McKeansburg.Ascension Thursday services will be held May 14 at Immanuel Congregational Church, Drehersville. The evening will begin with a hymn sing at 7:15 p.m.
