Lady Tigers win title again Palmerton boys sweep Northwestern and Northern Lehigh
The Northwestern girls track and field program has been the class of the Colonial League for as long as many on the team can remember.
Entering the season, the Lady Tigers were 22-0 over the last two years, winning back-to-back CL regular season dual meet titles in the process. But this year presented new challenges. While dealing with the loss of several talented athletes such as Haley Yost, Trista Cunningham and Hannah Masenheimer to graduation, the Northwestern girls were also facing a transition to a new coach in Chuck Groller, who was an assistant with the team for the previous two seasons when he instructed high, long and triple jumps, and pole vault and hurdles. As the regular season came to an end with yesterday's meet against Northern Lehigh and Palmerton, it's clear things have worked out just fine for Groller and Northwestern. The Lady Tigers swept the Lady Bulldogs (106-44) and Lady Bombers (1271/2-221/2) to finish the year 11-0, giving them their third straight undefeated campaign and third consecutive Colonial League dual meet championship."This is what they've worked for since the beginning of the season," said Groller. "We lost a lot of very talented girls from last year and they knew it wasn't going to be easy, but this was what they wanted."They've done everything we've asked of them. I couldn't be happier for this group of seniors. It's been quite a run."Northwestern, now 33-0 over the past three seasons, won 11 of the 18 events contested and took two of the top three spots in 11 of the 15 individual events.Much like she has at various times throughout their unprecedented winning streak, senior Sarah Segan led the way on the track for the Lady Tigers, winning the 400 (59.2) and 800 (2:35).Her individual performance aside, Segan was able to put the accomplishments of both herself and the team in perspective."This means a lot. Any Colonial League win you can get is just fantastic," said Segan. "We have such a deep team with so many very good athletes - we're so diverse in every single aspect and that's something you need to be successful."Every person on this team counts. Sometimes people go unnoticed…and people don't understand what it takes to achieve something like this. Every point counts, and I don't think everyone realizes that, but it does."Jessica Olewine won three events to help lead Northern Lehigh over Palmerton, 82-61.Olewine captured both the long (15-9) and triple (34-4) jumps as well as the pole vault (8-6) for the Lady Bulldogs (4-7)."Today really helped me see what I need to work on for leagues and districts," said Olewine. "My body is kinda tired, so the week off before leagues is definitely going to help."But being able to practice what I need to focus on for the league and district meets was great. I feel pretty solid with where I am right now."Olivia Green won the shot put (30-7.5) for the Lady Bombers (1-10), who also took first in the 400 relay. On the boys' side, Palmerton swept Northern Lehigh (81.5-67.5) and Northwestern (91-59) to finish the season 8-3.Jon Anthony led the way individually for the Bombers, winning the shot put (41-0) and discus (141-9).With the postseason on the horizon, Anthony has his sights set on what lies ahead."I'm hoping to become the league champion," the senior said of his goal for the discus. "I just need to focus on relaxing and making sure I do what I need to do."Overall, Palmerton won nine of the 18 events. The Blue Bombers took two of the top three places in six of the 15 individual contests.Northern Lehigh used a balanced effort to down Northwestern, 93.5-56.5.Floyd Snyder continued his strong season for the Bulldogs (6-4-1), winning the long (19-8) and triple (40-5) jumps.Like Anthony, Snyder is eager to see what he can do in the coming weeks."I feel like I've been getting more consistent every week, and that's put me in a pretty good spot for leagues and districts," he said. "If I pop a good one, I'll have a chance for something."Harry Hall (100) and Matthew Grim (3200) were individual event winners for the Tigers (7-4).BOYSNo. Lehigh 93.5, N'western 56.5Palmerton 81.5, No. Lehigh 67.5Palmerton 91, Northwestern 59100 - 1.
