Defendants enter guilty pleas in Carbon court

Defendants entering guilty pleas before Judge Roger N. Nanovic II on Monday:

Thorpe incidentPeter Hydro, 46, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to one count of persistent disorderly conduct. A charge of obstructing the administration of government function was dropped in a plea bargain.Hydro was arrested on Dec. 20, 2014, when fire companies and police responded to his residence at 711 Lehigh St. for a vehicle on fire. The fire from the vehicle, owned by Hydro, spread to a garage also owned by Hydro.Firefighters called police because Hydro was interfering with their efforts to extinguish the blaze. Police told Hydro to cease his actions, but he refused and was finally arrested.He said he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. He also said he has since sought help for a mental health issue.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, and also imposed zero tolerance for D&A use.Other pleasJamie Lee Taschler, 24, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of false reports.She was arrested on July 4, 2014, when Lehighton police responded to the area of 202 Main Lane, where Taschler claimed she was the victim of an attempted robbery and that the robber had pointed a handgun at her.Through the course of the investigation police learned the incident never happened and that Taschler told the story because she was mad at the alleged robber for not giving her a ride to Allentown, where she wanted to purchase heroin.Taschler told Nanovic she was addicted to heroin. She is currently an inmate in the county prison, serving a 160 day sentence for a probation violation.Nanovic placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a D&A evaluation. The term runs consecutive to her current prison term.Joshua Jeremy Strohl, 29, of Palmerton, entered pleas in two pending cases.He pleaded to one count of criminal mischief for an incident on May 31 at 430 Delaware Ave. Palmerton police charged him with causing damages to the apartment of Christine Smith. He also took her vehicle without permission, but that charge was dropped in a plea bargain.He pleaded to one count of forgery for an incident at the Rite Aid pharmacy in Palmerton. He attempted to pass a $5 bill as a $100 bill by altering the bill.Strohl is currently serving a state prison term of 18 to 60 months on drug charges that was imposed by Nanovic on Feb. 24.On the forgery charge Nanovic imposed a state prison terms of six to 24 months, and on the mischief count, one to 12 months with the terms running consecutive to each other but concurrent with the state term he is now serving.He was also ordered to get a D&A evaluation and supply a DNA sample.Nestor Ariel Alvarez, 21, of Allentown, pleaded to one count of simple assault.He was arrested on Dec. 24, 2014, by Palmerton police for an incident at the Palmerton hospital. Alvarez was brought to the emergency room after he was found unconscious. When he awoke he said he didn't know where he was and became combative.During the altercation he injured ER nurse Cynthia Faust. He said he was unconscious due to intoxication.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a D&A evaluation and have no contact with Faust.Paul Jamil Boyd, 28, of Nanticoke, pleaded to one count of false identification to law enforcement.He was arrested on July 20, 2014, following a vehicle stop by Weatherly police. At the stop he gave a false name to the officer. At the time he had outstanding warrants for his arrest issued in Luzerne County and New York state.Nanovic imposed a fine of $500.Vickie Velena Turoscy, 57, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of retail theft.She was arrested on Nov. 13, 2014, by Palmerton police at the Country Harvest Market at 572 Delaware Ave. She stole $42.89 worth of merchandise. She has a prior retail theft conviction.Nanovic placed her on probation for two years and ordered she get a mental health evaluation.D'Angelo Markquis Hyland, 19, of Easton, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of marijuana. He was arrested on July 18, 2014, in a parking lot at Beltzville State Park, by Franklin Township police. Police responded to the area and found Hyland in his vehicle with the illegal drug.Nanovic imposed a fine of $250.Justin Ramel Vereen, 21, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of criminal mischief. Counts of burglary and criminal trespass were dropped in a plea bargain.He was arrested on Oct. 29, 2014, by state police at Fern Ridge for an incident at 20 Cold Spring Drive in Penn Forest Township, the residence of GertrudeClancy.Nanovic imposed a fine of $300.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
