Tamaqua rallies to defeat Lehighton

Two teams who will become much more familiar with each other over the upcoming years clashed in a Schuylkill League contest on Monday.

First-year league member Lehighton has been gaining momentum recently as it entered the contest with a three-game winning streak.Tamaqua was looking to continue its Schuylkill playoff run after a non-league loss to Tri-Valley over the weekend. In the end, the Lady Raiders rallied to pull out a 4-3 victory.Tamaqua plated a run in each of the first two innings thanks to a pair of Indians errors and a few wild pitches. Brianna Wittig drove in the Tamaqua run during the second frame."The girls are starting to come together over the last four or five games," said Lehighton head coach Greg Poremba. "We gave them an unearned run in the first inning and that came back to haunt us at the end."Poremba's squad did all of its damage in the third inning. The Lady Indians (7-7, 4-6 SL) compiled four hits during the frame, including a solo home run from Amanda Louden and RBIs from Autumn Bickert and Saige Miller."Our hitters are really putting the bat on the ball," Poremba said. "We're down three starters right now and the girls that are filling in for them are doing a great job. I couldn't ask more of them. Tamaqua is a good team. This is a game we needed and that we should have had. We're going to try and get a couple more coming up soon."After the rough fourth inning, Tamaqua's Bailey Pedersen struck out two of three Indians' batters in the fifth and proceeded to then sit down the Indians in order in the sixth frame. Pedersen twirled a complete game while picking up the win, as she struck out three and walked just two."She knows how to bounce back," explained Tamaqua head coach Jillian Barron. "She kept her composure and she knows what to do. Some days the umpires are your friends and sometimes they're not, but she knows how to battle through it."For the most part, our defense has been there to back her up. She knows that they're there behind her and that it's not all on her shoulders. We've been stressing that since the beginning and we've had a low number of errors up to this point."Tamaqua (12-3, 8-1 SL) received its offensive boost in the bottom of the fifth inning from Shayna Dietrich. In truly clutch fashion, the Tamaqua senior crushed an opposite-field double with two outs, that drove in two runs, and proved to be the game-winning hit."That was a big hit and a huge confidence booster for her," said Barron. "She's "That was a big hit and a huge confidence booster for her," said Barron. "She's been in a slump lately and she's been very hard on herself, so it was huge that she came through. We've been coming up a little short lately (in terms of execution) but the girls just have to learn to get it done."With the win, Tamaqua remains one game behind Pottsville in the Schuylkill League Division 1.Lehighton 000 300 0 - 3 4 2Tamaqua 110 020 x - 4 7 0Bickert and Andrews; Pedersen and Sassaman.
