Northern Lehigh rallies to beat Catty

So far this season, the Northern Lehigh softball team has been on the losing end of four different games that were decided by one run. Bulldog head coach Bob Hicks has become all too familiar with the sense of urgency late in games.

The Bulldogs used a late-game explosion to make sure Thursday's game against Catasauqua didn't follow that pattern as they rallied for a 13-5 Colonial League victory."It feels pretty good to get this win," Hicks said afterwards. "We have lost a couple of close ones by one run. But we had a really good practice Wednesday and talked about some things that we need to do and what we need to focus on and they came out today and just did an awesome job."Catasauqua actually manufactured a 5-0 lead after four and a half frames before the Bulldogs mounted their comeback. In the bottom of the fifth, Tiff Yesik started the rally with an RBI single. That was followed by Amber Thomas' two RBI shot, which helped to eventually tie the game at 5-5 after five. Then in the bottom of the sixth, eight unanswered runs put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs as they improve their record to 9-5 overall on the season."Hitting is contagious and it just pumps everybody up," Hicks recalled about the big sixth. "They all want to do well. It comes down to who wanted it more and I know how badly our kids wanted this win today."Yesik and Taylor Herman started out the big frame with back-to-back singles before Thomas knocked in the go-ahead run. Sage Hargreaves struck out, but when the Rough Rider catcher dropped the ball and threw to first to retire Hargreaves, Herman intelligently sped for home and scored building a 7-5 lead.Amongst the ensuing barrage of hits and runs, Kianna Marlatt had a pair of RBIs.Herman, who finished the day going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, was more than happy to assist in the team win."We all worked really hard in practices and in the off-season," she said. "So it really feels great to accomplish the things that we can. Our big thing is focus and as long as we keep our heads up and stay positive, we know that we can do great things and be a great team."Thomas was a monster at the plate and on the mound in the game, as she struck out 10 batters on the day and didn't yield a sole base-on-balls."Amber did such a great job pitching today," Coach Hicks said. "Taylor Herman and Kianna really stepped up. I can't remember a time where everybody was hitting or contributing like they did today. They just worked together as a team today and that's big. They really work together with teamwork and hopefully we continue onward and upward. Let's keep this going."Also contributing offensively for Northern Lehigh were Thomas (two hits, three RBIs) and Marlatt (two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs).For the Roughies, Hannah Edwards finished the day 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four stolen bases.Catasauqua 201 110 0 - 5 9 4No. Lehigh 000 508 x - 13 11 0Ayache and Gallagher; Thomas and Hoffman.
