A Northampton County driver sustained what police called major injuries in a one-vehicle crash that occurred at 7 p.m. Sunday along Route 209 in Polk Township, Monroe County.

State police at Lehighton said Charles B. Sweigard Jr., 75, of Bethlehem, was driving a 2003 Honda Civic southbound, just east of Mill Pond Road, when he lost control and struck a utility pole along the west berm.After impact the Civic spun clockwise and traveled eight feet east and came to final rest facing northwest across both lanes of travel.Sweigard was taken by West End ambulance to St. Luke's University Hospital-Bethlehem.
