Tigers place four on first team

It is only fitting that one of the most successful seasons in recent memory is reflected as such in the 2014-15 Times News Wrestling All-Star Team.

A group typically comprised of 14 wrestlers - based on the number of weight classes - could only increase with 15 advancing to the PIAA Championships this past season. To put that in perspective, only six qualified in 2013-14.All seven Times News-area Class AA schools in the area enjoyed postseason success to some degree, with each sending at least one wrestler to Hershey. After placing only one wrestler on the First Team a year ago, Northwestern leads the way with four receiving the honor this season.Quentin Bernhard returns to the First Team for the second straight year after qualifying for his first state tournament. The junior came within seconds of winning a District 11 AA title before falling to Tri Valley's Caleb Bordner, and finished sixth at the Southeast Regional tournament.Jarett White, a Second Team selection last season, made strides in his junior year, returning to the Class AA Southeast Regional tournament for the second time, where he took fifth. Though White didn't leave Hershey with a medal, he did win two matches and appears primed for even more success next year. The Tigers' freshmen duo of Matt Peters and Caleb Clymer joined Bernhard and White in Hershey.Clymer turned in an incredible season that included a District 11 championship and a second place finish at the Southeast Regional tournament. Peters took fifth at districts and sixth at regionals. With all four back next year, and several other talented wrestlers on the roster, expect Northwestern to build on the progress it made this past season.Northern Lehigh, which had no representation on the First Team last year, had three get the nod this season.Matt Schmall continued his steady progression in his junior year, winning a district title and taking seventh at the PIAA Championships.Colten Rex and Ryan Farber, also district champions, joined Schmall in Hershey. After winning a District 11 Class AA team title, expect the Bulldogs to continue to grow under head coach Steve Hluschak. For the second consecutive year, Panther Valley sent three wrestlers to the PIAA Championships.Rian Shubeck capped his senior year by securing his 100th career win and his second straight trip to Hershey, where he finished eighth.Shubeck was joined by a pair of juniors in Ali Capobianco and Darren Goida, who made their first trips to Hershey.Goida made an immediate impact, earning an 8-3 decision in the 126-pound preliminaries over Brockway's Jack Glasl. While Palmerton didn't return from Hershey with a medal, the Blue Bombers doubled the amount they sent to the PIAA Championships with senior Zachary Graver making his second trip and sophomore Jared Mooney earning his first.Though neither came away with a win, head coach Justin Petersen should have plenty to build on heading into his second year as Palmerton's head coach.Jim Thorpe's Kevan Gentile and Lehighton's Connor Frey might have been the only representatives for their respective schools at the state tournament, but the two juniors certainly made their presence felt.Gentile and Frey both captured their 100th career wins in Hershey, and both finished on the medal stand.Gentile finished a remarkable season that also included district and regional championships with a fourth-place finish in his first appearance at the state tournament.Frey, a district champion making his second trip to Hershey, came home with a seventh-place medal after taking second at the Southeast Regional tournament. Both Frey and Gentile were head and shoulders above their competition all season, and both will have a chance to finish with a bang in their final year.Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz, who also captured his 100th win in his senior season, ended his career by qualifying for the state tournament for the first time.Despite losing his first match, Rynkiewicz bounced back to defeat Brandywine's Hunter Gimbor in his second round consolation match. While he didn't achieve his ultimate goal of finishing on the podium, Rynkiewicz certainly has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to at Roger Williams University, where he will continue his wrestling career.Pleasant Valley's Ahmad Curtis earns a First Team selection for the second consecutive year after taking second at the District 11 Class AAA tournament and fifth at the Northeast Regional, narrowly missing his first trip to the PIAA Championships.Curtis led the Bears in their first year of competition in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and head coach Justin Micklos should have plenty to build on moving forward with several talented underclassmen returning. The 16 selections (coming from any weight class) follow below with highlights from their season. The wrestlers combined for a 542-159 record, with 10 reaching the 30-win plateau and three surpassing 40-wins. They are listed in alphabetical order.TIMES NEWS WRESTLINGFIRST TEAM:Quentin Bernhard, Northwestern, Jr. (33-9)- Fifth at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic- Second at District 11 Class AA tournament- Sixth at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- First Team Colonial League selection- First Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "One of the hardest workers, and most coachable athletes I have ever had. (36-13)- Eighth at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic- District 11 Class AA champion at 138 pounds- Second at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- First Team Colonial League selectionAnother take: "One of the highlights of the year for us was Caleb winning districts. He wrestles smart, and is never afraid to go up against someone. Wally Frisch, one of our volunteer assistants who is in the room from time to time always says 'Never give up. Always attack. And fear no one.' And Caleb seems to do exactly that. He is a lot of fun to coach," Jim Moll.Ahmad Curtis, Pleasant Valley, Sr. (24-9)- Second at District 11 Class AAA tournament- Fifth at Northeast Regional tournament- Honorable Mention Eastern Pennsylvania Conference selection- First Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "Being a senior, it was unfortunate that he didn't advance (to states), but I'm proud of him either way. It was certainly a very special ride to be on. As a head coach, it was a great experience seeing Kevan succeed and how much joy his family had in watching him achieve his goals. Kevan is a goal-oriented athlete who put even more focus on his preparation last offseason and it paid off this season. His accomplishments have been well received by his peers as many are continuing their wrestling at different clubs and in our own room. There are two types of leaders - one that is vocal and one that leads by example. Kevan has led by example, and now his teammates are following," Jim Thorpe head coach Shawn Albert.Darren Goida, Panther Valley, Jr. (31-15)- Fifth at the District 11 Class AA tournament at 126 pounds- Sixth at the Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Coal Cracker tournament champion at 126 pounds- Third place at Schuylkill League tournament at 126 pounds- Penn Manor tournament champion- Second Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "(He) was a great team leader as an underclassman. He wrestled in a group of very talented freshmen that we have, and helped to make them into much better wrestlers as the season progressed. His work ethic got him to the next level, and he worked as hard as anyone to get to the state tournament," Tim Robb.Zachary Graver, Palmerton, Sr. (22-9)- Fifth at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic- Second at Dsitrict 11 Class AA tournament at 170 pounds- Fifith at the Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Third straight TN First Team all star selectionAnother take: "Graver has battled some injuries this year, but he got better everyday in the room. His work ethic alone gave us the leadership needed to help guys like (Jared) Mooney and Tre (Nelson) who don't have the experience he has. His goal this year was not to just make it out of districts, or make it out to states. His goal was to be on that medal stand out at Hershey. He didn't accomplish that, but we're still very proud of the season and career that he's had," Palmerton head coach Justin Petersen.Jared Mooney, Palmerton, So. (28-15)- Seventh at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic- Fifth at the District 11 Class AA tournament at 182 pounds- Sixth at the Southeast Regional tournament- Honorable Mention Colonial League selectionAnother take: "Mooney has matured throughout this season and simply got better every day. His ability to out-work opponents is what separated him from his competitors. He also has gained a lot of confidence in his offense on his feet. I think he can make a big impact next year and he definitely has the ability to get back to Hershey," Justin Petersen.Matt Peters, Northwestern, Fr. (34-11)- Fifth at the District 11 Class AA tournament at 106 pounds- Sixth at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Second Team Colonial League selectionAnother take: "He had a great start to his freshman year. He wrestles a lot of really tough competition. He is very good at following a game plan, and that won him a few matches this year. His goal was to make it to Hershey. He did that. He has already set new goals for next season," Jim Moll.Colten Rex, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (33-10)- District 11 Class AA champion at 113 pounds- Fifth at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Second Team Colonial League selection- Second Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "Colten had a great season. He worked real hard during the past offseason to get better and I think his hard work paid off. The highlight of the season was winning the district title at 113 pounds. I don't think many people picked him to win that weight so it was nice to see him get it done at individual districts," Steve Hluschak.Dylan Rynkiewicz, Tamaqua, Sr. (40-7)- Fourth at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Career record of 127-36, which ties him with Kolby Mashack for second all time at Tamaqua. Garth Lakitsky holds the record with 129.- Third at District 11 Class AA tournament at 138 pounds- Schuylkill League champion for second consecutive season- Second consecutive TN First Team selectionAnother take: "Dylan had a good season overall. He has improved each year since I have coached him. His senior season was highlighted by a (Schuylkill) League championship, district 3rd place, and PIAA state appearance. Each (except the league title) were the highest finishes he has had in his career. I know he was working for a state medal but I think his first appearance being his senior year put him in a more conservative wrestling mode once he got there, which makes the medal more difficult to reach. I also believe the 20-man bracket has definitely made the tournament more competitive and more difficult to reach that podium if you were not a regional finalist," Tamaqua head coach Jon Mashack.Matt Schmall, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (41-8)- Seventh at Bethlehem Holiday Classic- District 11 Class AA champion at 132 pounds- Third at Southeast Regional tournament- Seventh at PIAA Wrestling Championships- First Team Colonial League selection- Second Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "Schmall placing eighth in Hershey was nice as it gave me my first medalist and our team's first since Ty Herzog in the 2013-2014 season. We always preach bringing home hardware from the state tournament so it was nice to be able to do that," Steve Hluschak.Rian Shubeck, Panther Valley, Sr. (31-7)- Third at District 11 Class AA tournament at 195 pounds- Third at the Southeast Regional tournament- Eighth at the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Coal Cracker Tournament champion at 220 pounds- Second at the Schuylkill League tournament- Finished he career with 60 pin falls- Third straight TN First Team selectionAnother take: "He was more or less was our rock; the kids really looked up to him. His mentality towards the sport was what made him so tough. Sure, he is strong as an ox, and is athletic, but there are lots of guys out there like that. He never gets out of position, and wanted to out-condition guys. Mentally, he never broke. He was the biggest guy in our room, and would win most of the endurance drills and was in the top couple of guys running every time," Tim Robb.Jarett White, Northwestern, Jr. (36-10)- Seventh at Bethlehem Holiday Classic- Third at the District 11 Class AA tournament at 126 pounds- Fifth at Southeast Regional tournament- Qualified for the PIAA Wrestling Championships- Second Team Colonial League selection- Second Team TN all star last yearAnother take: "He had an awesome season. Last year he wasn't his best at the end of the year; he did not make it out of districts. This year he peaked at the right time. He wrestled hard all year long, especially at the end of the year. He is a lot of fun to watch wrestle," Jim Moll.TIMES NEWS WRESTLINGSECOND TEAM:Alex Russo, Northwestern, Sr.; Tre Nelson, Palmerton, Sr.; Cameron Kates, Northern Lehigh, Jr.; Andrew Sorensen, Northwestern, Jr.; Dylan Moyer, Panther Valley, Jr.; CJ Young, Northern Lehigh, Jr.; Nate Farber, Northern Lehigh, Sr.; Tyler Cann, Lehighton, Jr.; Austin Arnold, Northern Lehigh, Sr.; Tegan Durishin, Lehighton, Jr.; Zach Kemmerer, Lehighton, Jr.; Tanner Kennedy, Panther Valley, Fr.; Tanner McHugh, Tamaqua, So.; Baily Wehr, Northwestern, So.; Trent Thomas, Pleasant Valley, Jr.; Jason Jacobi, Pleasant Valley, Jr.; Brody Keefe, Pleasant Valley, Jr.
