The April meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the Tamaqua Municipal Building with Earl Boettger, Christine Zizelmann R.N., Shirley Becker, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N., and health enforcement officer Matthew Meyers in attendance.Meyers reported 50 health licenses have been approved and issued. There were 30 properties that failed inspection and two seasonal businesses are still to be inspected. During March, the health office received and adjusted 15 complaints: two buildings declared unfit for human habitation, two for animal waste, and the rest for trash.There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.The board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.Bucket booksThe Bucket List Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 6 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.The topic for discussion will be the classic "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck which tells the tale of George and Lennie, an unlikely pair who form a family. They face the loneliness and isolation as laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, living a hand-to-mouth existence. mturrano@lccc.edu.Over 50 fitnessThe Tamaqua Salvation Army has partnered with Diakon to provide gentle fitness exercise classes for those age 50 and older. Sessions are held at 10:30 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St.Sessions begin with a casual 20 minutes of aerobic movement through walking, then incorporates a variety of fitness genres, including yoga and tai chi, which help to increase balance, flexibility, strength and energy. Most routines can be done standing or sitting based on the individual's comfort level.Registration is free and walk-ins are welcome.Older and BolderThe Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group is back in action, meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesdays at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. Meetings include a light luncheon.At the next meeting, Maj. Sharon Whispell will provide an update on the planned Kidz Karnival. There will also be a discussion on the movie "God's Not Dead." Ed Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley.
