Pleasant Valley falls to Parkland

Squaring up against undefeated Parkland on Monday night, the Pleasant Valley softball team knew it had to play close to flawless ball.

But the Bears were anything but perfect against the defending league and District 11 champions.Four errors and 12 walks by Bears' pitchers allowed the Trojans to take a big lead and roll to a 9-1 victory in a rematch of last year's District 11 Class AAAA championship game."Parkland's a good team, but we're capable of playing a lot better than we played tonight," said Pleasant Valley head coach Steve Caffrey. "You can't make the errors we made or give as many walks away as we did tonight. We made contact offensively and I think our offense will keep us in a lot of games, but we still have to make the plays and allow our defense to make plays without all of the walks."Pleasant Valley was right with the Trojans for the first three innings. It was 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth. But that is when Parkland (8-0 overall) broke the game open. After Sam Pickar led off with a single, the next two batters were put on via a base on balls. Taylor Knappenberger (two hits, four RBI) tripled to the right center field wall and cleared the bases. She then scored on an Abby Fritzinger groundout to short for a four-run inning and a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth.Cassie Hill, who finished with two of Pleasant Valley's five hits on the night, came around to score on a Jenna Scheller RBI groundout in the top of the seventh for the Bears only run.Caffrey hopes that his team can use this as a learning block for what they can improve on moving forward. With five games this week, there will be plenty of time to improve on those areas. Pleasant Valley (4-3 overall) has already beaten defending AAA champ Bethlehem Catholic this season."We still play Pocono Mountain East, Central Catholic, Stroudsburg, and Freedom this week," noted Caffrey. "It doesn't matter who we play, we have to get good pitching and make the plays. You try to learn from the teams you play, and hopefully our girls looked at how Parkland played the game tonight and did all of the small things right. Hopefully we can follow suit."Pleasant Vy. 000 000 1 - 1 5 4Parkland 001 431 x - 9 8 1Kiersten Griesback, Morgan Fouts (5) and Cassie Hill, Naomi Morales (6); Aubrey Fritzinger, Jenna Lehr (7) and Sydney Stibitz.
