Olympian tennis team downs Bombers
A win can do wonders for a team's morale. For Jim Thorpe, that win couldn't have come at a better time than Monday.
The Olympians picked up three straight-set singles victories and went on to post a 4-1 non-league win over Palmerton.A losing skid has plagued both teams lately with Norb Lienhard's Jim Thorpe squad dropping a tough decision over the weekend to Kutztown. So the victory came at an opportune time, supplying the student-athletes with reason to remain positive."It's nice to get the win," Lienhard said. "I feel that the guys needed a win. We've been having some struggles with some close matches that we lost recently, that I felt we could have possibly won. Today, it was nice to get the win."Palmerton's lineup of student-athletes was decimated from a state competition for the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), which threw a wrench into head coach Alex Knoll's plans. Four of the Blue Bombers' top seven were unable to participate in the match, causing the winless squad to switch up their roster for the match."Kids have other responsibilities and other extra-curricular activities that they're involved in," Knoll said. "Today, we had a lot of kids at Hershey for the FBLA States. It's a good thing that they're doing well academically. So, it's not necessarily a detriment, it's just unfortunate that it fell on a match day."The Olympians' number one singles player, John Lowin, earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Marc Roselli (a regular at number three singles). The senior lefty, who prefers to shorten points with a serve-and-volley approach to the game, was content with the result."It went well. I placed the ball where I wanted, my serve was working well. It makes most of the games a little easier for me when my game is working."Lowin was also happy about the team win, saying, "It was nice because we play a lot of teams on our schedule that are good and it's hard to get wins against them. With that being our fourth win, we have a lot of teams left on the schedule that we could possibly beat, so reaching districts is still a possibility."Brett Luicana and Luke Eggert gave up one game between their two matches, adding to the impressive win over the Bombers. However, coach Lienhard was still slightly concerned."I thought some of the kids struggled. I thought they should have been hitting better," Lienhard said. "Hopefully they get over that and stick to their guns because we have a stretch of potentially winnable matches."Meanwhile, the Bombers will try to finally hit the win column when they host winless Wilson in a doubleheader today."We have seven matches left in the season and we're still improving," Knoll said. "Today, we got some kids experience that normally don't get to play, so that was nice."Knoll was happy with his number one doubles team that earned his team's sole team point, as Jacob Brown and Sal Melo took a 7-5, 6-1 win."They work well together, they're a good doubles team," Knoll said. "Jake plays really well at net and wins a lot of quick points that way. I think that got them back to .500 for the year."Jim Thorpe 4, Palmerton 1SINGLESJohn Lowin (JT) def.
