The brief marriage between Mahoning Township and the Borough of Lehighton regarding future sewage needs in the Packerton and Jamestown areas is apparently over.

The township's board of supervisors, citing soaring costs caused by Lehighton demands, voted 2-0 Wednesday night to withdraw its plans to join the Lehighton system and build its own system. The action comes less than two months after Mahoning, faced with the possibility of losing a $593,700 Department of Community Affairs grant, gave in to the wishes of the state Department of Environmental Resources and agreed to become part of a regional sewage facility that Lehighton controls.
