Durishin, Knappenberger lead Tribe to tennis win

Palmerton and Lehighton met for the second time this season and for the second time, the Tribe pulled out a tight victory over the Blue Bombers, this time a 3-2 decision.

Spearheaded by strong singles showings from Tegan Durishin and Josh Knappenberger, along with a straight-set win by the female tandem of Emily Cerimele and Andrea Schafer at number two doubles, the Indians improve their record to 4-2 on the young season."It was a close match, so I was happy with the win," Lehighton head coach Dave Sherry said. "We basically won the same matches that we won the first time we played them, when we won up in Lehighton. Those three matches proved to be important ones for us."Durishin, the Tribe's number one player, accidentally sliced his hand earlier in the day and needed to adjust both physically and mentally for the match."I got my hand caught on a gate right as we were about to leave," Durishin said. "And when I went to rip it out, my finger got into it and I didn't know, and it cut my finger pretty badly."Since the injury was on his weak hand, the right-hander was slightly lucky. However, being a two-handed backhander, it still had a tremendous impact on his approach."My backhand was a lot weaker, obviously, because I had to slice it instead of my two-hander.""It hurt him and he couldn't drive his backhand at all and he ended up chopping at stuff," Sherry added.Even though Palmerton's Rich Roselli got out to a quick start on him, Durishin managed to rattle off the next four games to take the second set, 6-3. In the second, the two battled evenly before the Indian pulled it out, 6-4 for the straight-set win.In the number three singles match, Lehighton's Josh Knappenberger faced a different opponent this time around, but had a similar result, as he didn't relinquish a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win."It wasn't the same person that I played against the first time that we played, but I guess I wanted the match over as quickly as possible so that I could get warm on the bus," Knappenberger said. "My serve was on today and I had a lot of aces. My groudstrokes were also pretty good today, too."At number two singles, Seth Andress outlasted the Indians' Spence David in a marathon that saw the two split the first two sets, before a third-set pro-set tiebreaker, in which Andress prevailed, 10-5."It feels good to win," Andress said. "He kept coming up to the net and he's very tall. I couldn't really lob it over him too well, so I ended up trying for passing shots a lot."The two teams saw their doubles matches split, as Cerimele and Schafer took the number two doubles match, 6-0, 6-2. At number one doubles, the tandem of Sal Melo and Jacob Brown took a 6-3, 6-3 win to keep things close."I'm really impressed with Seth and our number one doubles team," Palmerton head coach Alex Knoll said. "They've been improving for us all year long, and they're giving us a better chance. Last year, where some of our guys were just getting experience, now some of our guys are taking that experience and taking it a step further and winning matches."With the loss, the Blue Bombers drop to 0-8 on the season.Lehighton 3, Palmerton 2SINGLESTegan Durishin (L) def.
