Coaldale driver faces charges in collision

Branislav Brili, 46, of 126 Greenwood St., Coaldale, has been charged by Coaldale police in connection with a crash on March 26.

Coaldale fire police had closed down Route 209 near the intersection with Fifth Street due to a fire.A green 2001 Isuzu Rodeo was being used as a fire police vehicle, stationed in the roadway with roof top emergency lights activated.At 7:51 p.m., Brili was driving a black 2009 Subaru Forester west on Route 209 and failed to stop when he saw the emergency vehicle. He continued forward and caused a head-on collision, almost striking a member of the Coaldale fire police who was directing traffic around the scene. The firefighter, who was wearing a fluorescent yellow coat and using an illuminated orange traffic wand, had to jump out of the way to avoid being part of the accident.Brili told police he did not see the flashing red lights, but later told a volunteer firefighter he thought the emergency vehicle would simply get out of his way.He was charged with reckless endangerment, failure to heed an authorized person directing traffic, failure to follow the duties required in an emergency response area, careless driving, reckless driving and driving at an unsafe speed.
