Council tables support request

During Tuesday's meeting, the Bowmanstown Borough Council voted unanimously to table the request by the Carbon County Commissioners in showing support for the new fire and emergency services training center.

Councilman Darren Thomas started the discussion with a concern. He said, "I can't see making a bigger deficit to the county budget."Council President Kara Scott said, "If we are not getting funding to our communities that is needed, how can the county spend the amount they are seeking."Councilman Rob Moyer said, "They want to build it on the Broad Mountain, why when we have the whole Packerton Yard area?"Councilmen Norman Engle and Darren Thomas made a motion to send a letter back to the commissioners seeking for information about the project. This motion passed with all council members agreeing.Street sweepingResidents may be asked to sweep their streets. With the spring weather finally here, council discussed an agenda item about street sweeping. There were concerns raised that the cost of paying for a street sweeper in previous years has cost the borough more than $2,000. This expenditure, according to Councilman Burdell Steigerwalt, "was not placed in the 2015 budget."Engle suggested the borough ask the residents to sweep the streets. "Let's have the residents sweep and gather the piles, and we will have them picked up."President Kara Scott provided direct rebuttal to this idea with, "We have a lot of elderly people in the borough. This is a service that we should provide to our residents."After further discussion, council approved the streets committee to seek a street sweeping service with a cost not to exceed $2,000.
