The Tamaqua Salvation Army will host AARP Safe Driving classes, full certification and refresher, in April. The classes are open to anyone age 50 or older.The full certification, 8-hour class will be held in two sessions, from noon to 4 p.m. on April 13 and 14. The refresher class, which is four hours, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on April 16.James Greaser will be the instructor for all sessions. The refresher course is available to those who have completed the full certification class within the past 36 months.While membership in AARP is not required, there is a discount for members. There are no tests involved.Participants over 55 who successfully pass the course will be provided with a certificate, which will qualify them for a discount with their auto insurer. The certificate is good for a three-year period.Class sizes are limited, so reservations are required.The classes will be held at 105 W. Broad St.For more information, or to reserve a space, call 570-668-0410.Ending violenceTamaqua's "Live the Green Dot" program, designed to find ways to end violence by bystander intervention, will sponsor a training seminar for those involved in the pub and restaurant industry. The hourlong training session will be from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at Vonz Restaurant in the Tamaqua Train Station.The session is geared to help bar, club and restaurant owners and staff recognize signs of personal violence, offering them tools to prevent a crime from occurring in their establishment.The event is open to the public.
