Lehighton man sentenced on theft, conspiracy counts

A Lehighton man who said his crime spree was fueled by his drug addiction was sentenced Monday in Carbon County court to a county prison term but won't be serving any more time in jail.

Randy Edgar, 34, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of six to one day less 24 months in the county prison on charges of criminal conspiracy-theft, receiving stolen property and criminal trespass.Edgar, however, won't be serving any more prison time as he was given credit for a total of 198 days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and jail time. He also must pay a large restitution bill.Edgar was arrested for his part in various thefts that occurred between October 2013 and February 2014 in the Lehighton area.Edgar told Matika he was sorry for his actions but said he was addicted to heroin and stole to support that habit. He also said, "The best thing ever to happen to me was being arrested." Edgar said he was furloughed from the county prison late last year and spent six and a half months in an inpatient program sponsored by the Salvation Army in Harrisburg and successfully completed it.He told Matika, "I learned a lot from the program. I learned how to live life again."Matika said, "Sometimes people have to hit rock bottom. You really hit rock bottom but learned from it."Matika added, "Your addiction caused all of this, but I want to congratulate you on what you have done."The jail term will be followed by one year of probation. In addition, Matika ordered Edgar to make total restitution to various victims of $3,325, render a total of 125 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance on drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with any of the victims or his co-defendant, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation. His co-defendant in the case, Stephanie N. Lill, 26, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty late last year to counts of burglary and was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve 24 to 48 months in a state correctional institution and pay restitution totaling $6,343.Edgar went with Lill on many of the entries to homes. Some homes he entered, while at other times he waited outside. He also participated in getting rid of the stolen merchandise.
