Nesquehoning fills council seat

Nesquehoning Council has filled its vacant seat.

Immediately following the opening of council's monthly meeting on Wednesday, the board opened up nominations to fill the vacant seat, which was created last month with the passing of Councilman Robert Marouchoc.Three borough residents were nominated, including David J. DeMelfi, George J. Sabol III and Robert Stempa.Following a roll-call vote of council members who were present, Sabol and DeMelfi both had two votes. Mayor Samuel Kitchko then voted for Sabol. Councilman Michael Sniscak Jr. was absent.Sabol, who was present at the meeting, was called before council and was sworn in by Kitchko, he then took his seat at the table and the meeting began.Sabol is a lifelong resident of the Panther Valley area. He was born in Lansford but has resided in Nesquehoning for the last 20-plus years.He said that he was appreciative for the chance to serve his community."I'm trying to do my part to better the town," he said after the meeting. "I see how it is in different areas of the country and I want us to catch up. I hope to bring things in to help the residents."Sabol is married to the former Sametta Degiglio. The couple has three daughters and a son.In other matters, Nesquehoning acted on the following items:• Kitchko reported that for the month of February, police collected a total of $2,822.02; filed 76 citations; had a total of 440 incidents reported; and drove 2,767 while on patrol.• Approved the amendment of the vehicle and traffic ordinance that now prohibits vehicles from being parked in the same spot on borough streets for longer than 48 hours. If a vehicle does not move within that time period, officials could fine or tow the vehicle.• Nesquehoning Fire Chief John McArdle asked permission for the three fire companies to complete a Hazmat drill at a business in the borough in May. Council approved the request.• Approved the request to create resolutions honoring Christopher Santore and Jacob Snyder on achieving the rank of Eagle Scouts. Santore will be honored at an Eagle Scout ceremony on April 11; while Snyder will be honored on May 30.• Councilman Don DeMarco said that some major street repairs are needed along various roads in the borough and crews will be working on the problems in the near future.He also said that street sweeping will also take place in the borough once the weather breaks. He reminds residents that streets will be posted 24 hours before sweeping takes place and violaters will be fined if they do not move their vehicle.• Councilman Mark Stromelo said an Easter egg event will be held for borough children at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center at 1 p.m. on April 4. To register a child, call the rec center on Wednesday.• Voted to approve looking into prices for the purchase of a one-ton dump truck for the sewer department that will also be used by the borough. Council will have figures for its April meeting.
