March 23, 1987 Tamaqua's track teams open their season with a sweep of Bishop Hafey. The Blue Raider boys win 15 of 18 events to post a 115-35 victory. John Mateyak captures three events (shot, discus, javelin) while Vance Welker (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Ray Kinder (high jump, triple jump) and Eric Woodring (1600, 3200) are double-winners. In the girls meet, three Tamaqua athletes each gain two wins to claim a 100-41decision. Those double-winners were Missy Chinchar (100 hurdles, 3200), Sue Abazly (shot, javelin) and Denise Stahler (100, long jump).
