PIAA alters heat policy for football

High school football teams in Pennsylvania will now have five days to adjust to the heat, rather than the three days they previously had.

By an 18-12 vote, the PIAA board of directors approved the expansion of the heat acclimatization period during a meeting Thursday in Hershey. This season, heat acclimatization will begin Aug. 10 and the first day official day of practice will be Aug. 17.Football will remain the only sport that has the heat acclimatization period, though Majikes said a question was brought up as to why it is only enforced for football.Teams will have the choice to either conduct the acclimatization the five days prior to the start of official practice or the first five days of official practice.
