Schuylkill prison board fills 5 positions

The Schuylkill County Prison Board on Wednesday filled five of eight vacant jobs.

Seven of the open positions were for corrections officers and one was a maintenance job.One corrections officers retired and four got jobs at the federal prison in the county, said Deputy Warden David Wapinsky. In a related matter, prison board members discussed the need to require two weeks' notice before leaving a job. The current union contract does not address that. The county is also working on revised emergency evacuation plans for the prison.Wapinsky said the county is doing its best to mirror state plans. He previously submitted a plan, but that one was rejected. Now, he said, officials are meeting emergency management staff, Pottsville police, Sheriff Joseph Groody and others to craft a new plan.He said he would not submit the new plan "until all the bases are covered."In other matters, the county is buying more cameras to install at the prison on Sanderson Street in Pottsville.Last month, three additional cameras were installed, including one aimed at the outside of the main entrance, another in work release and a third in an office. Also on Wednesday, Prison Board Chairman Commissioner George F. Halcovage Jr. said the county sought quotes on 50 additional hard plastic stackable cots due to overcrowding. The prison at the end of February held 281 inmates. The prison was built to accommodate 172 inmates. The county has received three quotes: AnchorTex, of West Berlin, New Jersey, is asking $238.14 each; Bob Barker of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina is asking $240 each; and Pennsylvania Correctional Industries, $235 each. Also on Wednesday, Halcovage said a March 4 sweep for drugs and cellphones went well and will be repeated at least once a year. The sweep, using officers and trained dogs through state Department of Corrections in Harrisburg, turned up no contraband.Halcovage said the sweep was done by surprise, with not even corrections officers being told it was going to happen until the time came.
