Towamensing discusses pipeline

The March 12 meeting of the Towamensing Township supervisors, rescheduled due to bad weather on its normal March 5 date, opened with an executive session about litigation.

Tammy Plevretes updated supervisors on a meeting about the proposed PennEast pipeline.She said only 26 of 47 people had time to speak, and they were only given three minutes each and then cut off.The resolutions against the PennEast gas pipeline have been signed by every affected township except Penn Forest, and she hopes it will be on its agenda for the April meeting. There have been two meetings in Bethlehem because of the need to protect the Bethlehem Watershed supply in Towamensing.Lakeview Estates was to get its final inspection March 13, engineer Greg Haas said.Supervisors denied a campground's waivers for smaller shoulders, fencing and spillways as it would require a design change. The owners thought due to the slow speeds some things would not have to be as well-designed as the original plan showed them. Speeds are 15 mph on the entrance roads and 5 mph on internal roads.There is no winter maintenance because the campground is closed in winter.Supervisor Tom Newman, who is also the emergency management coordinator for the township, said in an emergency people don't think straight, and they had to anticipate that.Supervisor Penny Kleintop said she would agree with some of the waivers but not all. Even if she had voted in favor of the waivers the denial would have passed 2-1.A resolution was passed appointing Kirk, Summa and Company LLP, as auditors for the township.Scott Bieber was appointed SEO and Sean Corey is alternate, reversing their previous positions.Bob O'Donnell had applied for a position to the planning commission. He said he had 15 years on the Weatherly board. The planning commission meets the second Monday at 7 p.m.The subdivision and land development plan draft is under review. No major changes are expected.The roadmaster reported on snowplowing. He asked to purchase a Master Mix Tailgate Pugmill so they won't have to buy premixed cold patch. The cost of $16,500 is from Stevenson Equipment and is a Costars price.Fire Chief Wayne Knirnschild reported three mutual aide calls: one each for Polk, Franklin and Aquashicola. In answer to a question he said there are usually five or six people who turn out at emergency events.The insurance check is in the bank for repairs to a tanker, but Knirnschild is not sure if he wants to repair or replace the truck.Thank you letters for donations were received from Blue Mountain Health System Home Health Care and the Palmerton Area Public Library. Fire police will help at the Blue Mountain Health System 5K run on May 9, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Palmerton Borough Park.
