Smelas, Sofranko, Meinhart contribute for Wilkes hoops

Three area student/athletes were part of the Wilkes University women's basketball program this past season.

Jim Thorpe graduate Chelsea Smelas, Marian grad Emily Sofranko and Palmerton graduate Emelie Meinhart all contributed for the Colonels, who finished with a 10-14 overall record and 4-10 mark in Freedom Conference games.Smelas, a sophomore, started 22 games and played in all 24 this season. She averaged playing over 25 minutes a game and was among the team leaders in several categories. She averaged 8.2 points per game (4th on team), 5.6 rebounds (2nd), and had 29 steals (3rd).Sofranko, a freshman, came off the bench to play in 22 games this season. She averaged 13.2 minutes, 1.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. She was second on the team in assists also tied for third on the team with 29 steals.Meinhart played in 19 games off the bench for the Colonels, averaging 7.3 minutes per contest. The sophomore averaged 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
