Driver berates officer; passenger arrested

A traffic stop landed a Tamaqua man in the Schuylkill County Prison on March 1, even though he was a passenger in the car.

An officer was monitoring traffic at 3:40 p.m. when a red coupe traveling north on Route 309 caught his attention. The car made a right turn onto Route 209 without using a turn signal. The car crossed the double yellow line twice, then almost hit a parked car as the driver swerved back into the traffic lane. The officer activated the cruiser's emergency light to conduct a traffic stop and the car turned in to the parking lot at Turkey Hill. As the officer approached the vehicle, the passenger side door opened and a man exited the car. He was told to stay inside the vehicle, but refused. When the officer told him to return to the car, the male began cursing at the officer. At this point the female driver began berating the officer. She was identified as Ann Marie Tuckey, 61, of 38 Walnut St., Delano. Her male passenger refused to provide identification until he was told he would be transported to a state police barracks where a "live scan" would be conducted. He was then identified as Eric Smith, 47, of 306 E. Elm St.Tuckey was given a warning. Smith was transported to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville after a routine records check turned up an arrest warrant issued by the Schuylkill County Sheriff's Department.
