Gentile falls in quarters
HERSHEY - For the first time this postseason, Kevan Gentile didn't get his hand raised.
Gentile suffered his first true loss of the year when he dropped an 8-7 decision to Chestnut Ridge's Aaron Burkett in the 106-pound quarterfinals of the PIAA Wrestling Championships on Friday morning.Burkett showed more aggression and offense than Gentile has seen this year, scoring more points than any of the Jim Thorpe's junior's previous opponents."It was a match that could have gone either way," said Jim Thorpe head coach Shawn Albert. "But we just have to refocus and come back later today with a clear head."Burkett took and early lead in the first, but Gentile was able to tie the score 2-2 after one.Burkett led 4-2 after two, and didn't let the lanky Gentile use his size to his advantage, as both wrestles stayed on their feet throughout much of the contest.Gentile scored in the third to take a 7-6 lead, but Burkett was able to comeback with a late takedown for an 8-7 advantage with 30 seconds to go, which proved to be the difference in the match."His stamina was just better than mine," Gentile said afterwards.Panther Valley's Rian Shubeck went into the quarterfinals on a forfeit win over Greenville's Zach Miller."It's not the way I wanted it, but it's still a spot in the quarterfinals," said Shubeck, who will take on Elizabeth Forward's Luke Fournier. "I've just got to come back and be ready to wrestle tomorrow."Northern Lehigh's Matt Schmall (132) and Ryan Farber (145), Northwestern's Caleb Clymer (138) and Lehighton's Connor Frey (182) all suffered narrow first round losses on Thursday morning.Schmall dropped a 7-0 decision to Brockway's Mason Lindenmuth, while Farber was on the short end of a 3-1 decision against Muncy's Dakota Nixon.Schmall came back to win his second round consolation bout, 3-2 over Annville Cleona's Josh Renninger.Clymer also rebounded for a second round consolation bout victory as he decisioned Tri-Valley's Chase Schaeffer, 2-0.Clymer couldn't generate any offense against Grove City's Luke Walter, who won by a 3-1 decision. But the freshman rebounded for an ultimate tiebreaker win over Smethport's Adam Shunk in the second round of consolations to stay alive.Northwestern's Jarret White, who won his first round consolation match 11-2 over Warrior Run's Eric hunt, also won in overtime in the second round of consolations, 6-4 over Brookville's Cole Aaron."I just had to keep wrestling and not give up," White said afterwards. "It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I can score late and comeback like that."Despite trailing for much of the match, Frey was able to mount a late charge against South Fayette's Brett Beltz that came up just short. The junior scored a reversal near the end of the third period, but it wasn't enough, as he fell by a score of 7-6.Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz came back from a preliminary round loss to stay alive, defeating Brandywine's Hunter Gimbor, 5-2 in the first round of consolations. But the junior's tournament ended when he dropped a 6-2 decision to Palisades' Tyler Marsh in the second round of consolation matches. While a total of seven are still alive in either the quarterfinals or consolation bracket, the tournament came to an early end for many on the first day of competition.Northern Lehigh's Colten Rex (113), Northwestern's Matt Peters (106) and Quentin Bernhard (120), Palmerton's Zachary Graver (170) and Jared Mooney (182) and Panther Valley's Darren Goida (126) and Ali Capobianco (138) were all eliminated after dropping two matches on the opening day of the event.Rex suffered a 3-0 loss to Southern Columbia's Shane Casey in the first round of consolation matches.Peters was eliminated when he lost 9-2 decision to Westmont-Hilltop's Derrick Christie, while Bernahrd was bounced when he dropped a 7-4 decision to Burgettstown's Austin McDermitt.Milton's Brandon Stokes eliminated Graver, who lost his preliminary match to Beth-Center's Anthony Welsh 10-3, with a 4-2 decision in the consolation bracket.
