Bears' Curtis in semis
Ahmad Curtis needed more than three periods to win his quarterfinal match Friday night at the Northeast Regional AAA tournament at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium.
But how long it took doesn't matter, as Curtis was the the only Pleasant Valley wrestler to move to Saturday morning's semifinal round, following a 3-1 overtime victory over Stephane Eugene of George Washington.Curtis came into regionals as the Bears best shot to advance to Hershey and that sentiment continued to play out, as Curtis used a high single-leg in overtime to trump Eugene and set up a semifinal bout with Dallas heavyweight Ryan Monk."I knew if I got the right ankle, I could just pick his leg up and take him down from there," said Curtis. "He's a strong kid and has a good base. I got my hips low and stayed in a stance and shot. That's what got me the win."The wrestlers dueled to a 1-1 draw after three periods, trading escapes in the second and third periods. Curtis shot deep on a single leg with five seconds left in the third period and was close to a takedown before the buzzer. That would be the precursor to his eventual victory, as he used the same move 27 seconds into overtime to post the win.It was the only win of the quarterfinals for the Bears, who saw Jason Jacobi (120) and Trent Thomas (195) both fall.Jacobi succumbed to Northampton's Michael Scheetz by a 15-0 technical fall in 5:14 during his quarterfinal match. Thomas got pinned by Whitehall's Joe Gladish in 4:59. Both wrestlers will return for this morning's second round of consolations."They just have to get their mind set right and come to wrestle," said Pleasant Valley coach Justin Micklos. "Trent was right there in his match and Jason can win his matches. They just have to wrestle tough and try to come back and place in the top four."Brody Keefe (170) lost his preliminary match to Scranton's Niyaz Bakradze 5-3 and came back to win his first round consolation bout with a fall in 2:15 over Josh Mitchell over Roman Catholic to keep his tournament hopes alive as well. With the top four finishers in each weight class advancing to Hershey this year, Curtis knows he's only one win away from making that dream a reality. Curtis and Monk have already wrestled at the Lackawanna Trial Duals on Jan. 24.Curtis won that matchup by a fall, but expect things to not be that easy in the semifinals with a spot to Hershey on the line."It's very exciting," Curtis said. "One more win and I'm going to Hershey, but I can only take one match at a time and focus on what I have to do. I just need to keep wrestling hard and stay focused and I'll be good."
