Shackleton, Kanaskie top seeds

This weekend has been marked on the calendars of swimmers for months as the District 11 swim championships at Parkland High School kicks off Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. for the AA participants. The two-day event will continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

With plenty of TIMES NEWS area hopefuls looking to 'make waves,' there could be numerous achievements to speak of when all is said and done.Headlining that school of swimmers is Northwestern senior Trey Shackleton, who is seeded first in the 500 freestyle and second in the 200 freestyle as he looks to continue on to the PIAA Meet for the third consecutive time. A year ago, the Tiger broke his own record in taking the gold medal in the distance event, and is hoping to improve upon that mark in the approaching days. He finished second in the 200 free race in 2014, and is seeded in that same position this year behind Salisbury's Mahlon Reihman.Shackleton is not the only area swimmer looking to make a mark on the medal stand as Marian sophomore Katie Kurzinsky is the top seed in the 100 backstroke event, with a time of 1:01.89, three seconds faster than the second-seeded Allison Adams of Schuylkill Haven (1:04.34). She is also the second seed in the 100 freestyle event, behind Southern Lehigh's Jenna Forrester. While Kurzinsky and Shackleton are the only top-seeded area swimmers in their respective events, there are plenty of other representatives from the TN coverage area that are seeded highly and looking to make it to the podium after the finish of their respective races. While Tamaqua is sending their team to the event, there are participants from Northern Lehigh, Marian, Weatherly, and Palmerton that are without a team, yet looking to represent their schools to the best of their abilities.Tamaqua senior Danielle DeCindio is looking to round out her career with a medal. She is seeded third in both the 50 free and 100 butterfly events. Her best shot appears to be in the 100 Fly, as the top three seeds are seperated by under one second.Teammate Rebecca Kanaskie, a sophomore, is also seeded highly in two events. She enters the 200 IM seeded second, behind Southern Lehigh's Rachael Rodriguez. In the 100 Breast, she is seeded third with Rodriguez also earning the top seed in that event.Lastly from the Blue Raiders, junior Benjamin Turrano earned a third seed in the 100 fly three seconds behind the top-seeded Jared LaSelva of Bethlehem Catholic. While Shackleton remains the top seed in the 500 freestyle, and is a heavy favorite to win the event, two other locals look to garner some hardware in that event. Marian sophomore Timmy Dando is seeded second. Dando is the best shot for the silver medal, but his seed time is 24 seconds behind Shackleton's top time. Meanwhile, Northern Lehigh junior Jose Avila is the fourth seed in the same event.Another Bulldog swimmer, Scarlet Ojeda (senior), is seeded fourth in the 100 butterfly, while teammate Wyatt Delans (sophomore), is fourth in the 100 breast, directly behind third-seeded Jacob Sirkot, a Weatherly junior. Sirkot's seed time is just under six seconds behind the event's top seeded Nathanael Marino of Blue Mountain.Another noteworthy area high seed is Tamaqua's 200 freestyle relay team of Rebecca Kanaskie, Emily Andrews, Abigail Brickler and Danielle DeCindio who enter the event as the third seed.DISTRICT 11 SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPAA GIRLS(Top seeds; other local qualifiers)200 Medley Relay - 1.
