(22-11);Notes - Gentile was head and shoulders above his peers at the District 11 Class AA Tournament over the weekend. The junior went 4-0, pinning his first three opponents - the second of which was Kemmerer; the third Peters - before getting a technical fall over Palisades' Zack Wasser in the 106-pound final. The title may just be a sign of what's to come for Gentile as we go deeper into the postseason. Kemmerer moves above Fronheiser after pinning his freshman counterpart in the prelims. Kemmerer also pinned Mader in the consolation bracket before dropping a 6-0 decision to Peters in the fifth place match. Peters and Gentile advanced to this weekend's regional tournament.113 - 1. Colten Rex, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (26-6); 2. Baily Wehr, Northwestern, So. (27-12); 3. John Newhall, Jim Thorpe, Fr. (18-16).Honorable Mention - Mike Lazar, Panther Valley, Sr. (13-9); Gary Goodhile, Panther Valley, So. (9-9).Notes - Rex turned in an incredible performance en route to his Class AA 113-pound title. Rex beat Wehr 5-3 in the quarters, before knocking off No. 2 seed Mason Edwards of North Schuylkill in the semis. The junior might have saved his best for last, earning a 6-4 decision to dispatch top seed Willy Girard of Williams Valley in overtime. Wehr defeated Newhall in the prelims, then got past Lazar in the consolation bracket. After losing to Saucon Valley's Jack Hill, Wehr rebounded to defeat Tri Valley's Kyle Stephen in the fifth place match. Rex and Wehr advanced to this weekend's regional tournament.120 - 1. Quentin Bernhard, Northwestern, Jr. (30-4); 2. Jason Jacobi, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (29-7); 3. Zachary Kemmerer, Lehighton, Jr. (28-9).Honorable Mention - Tanner Kennedy, Panther Valley, Fr. (27-18).Notes - Bernhard went 3-1 in the Class AA tournament, pinning his first three opponents, including Kemmerer in the semis. The junior gave up a late reversal against Tri Valley's Caleb Bordner in the final, losing 3-2. Kemmerer got past Kennedy, 4-3, in the consolation bracket before he beat Central Catholic's Jack Yanders for third place. After losing to Kemmerer, Kennedy fought back to top Salisbury's Zach Adams to finish fifth. Jacobi was impressive in the Class AAA tournament, defeating Parkland's Angelo Mastrangelo to take fifth place. Bernhard, Kemmerer, Kennedy and Jacobi all advanced to the regional tournament.126 - 1. Jarret White, Northwestern, Jr. (30-6); 2. Tanner McHugh, Tamaqua, So. (33-6); 3. Darren Goida, Panther Valley, Jr. (27-10).Honorable Mention - Jackson Bernhard, Northwestern, Fr. (10-9).Notes - Another group that enjoyed great success this past weekend. White defeated Goida, 7-1, in the quarters before falling to top seed Sammy Hepler of Tri Valley in the semis. White went 2-0 in the consolation bracket, defeating McHugh, 2-0, in the third place match. Though close, the head-to-head win puts White above McHugh this week. McHugh lost 3-1 in overtime to eventual champion Chase Anklam of Pen Argyl in the semifinals. The sophomore defeated Goida 3-2 in his first consolation match before falling to White. Goida was able to come back and defeat Williams Valley's Alex Raho for fifth place. White, McHugh and Goida all advanced to the regional tournament.132 - 1. Matt Schmall, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (35-4); 2. Dalton Webster, Northwestern, So. (12-10); 3. Cody Scherer, Lehighton, Fr. (17-12).Honorable Mention - Hunter Kennedy, Panther Valley, Fr. (25-19).Notes - Schmall won several close matches en route to the AA 132-pound title. The junior pinned his first opponent, then scored a 5-3 win over Scherer in the quarters before claiming a 4-0 win over North Schuylkill's Jess Wetzel in the semis. Schmall knocked off top seed Jason Jones of Saucon Valley by a 5-2 score in the final. But there were quite a few interesting results from several others in this group. Scherer, the 10th seed, pinned No. 7 seed David Reif of Notre Dame Green Pond in the prelims before falling to Schmall. Scherer's tournament ended when he dropped a 4-3 decision to Pen Argyl's Phil Zito, who finished fourth, in his first consolation match. Kennedy was the third seed but didn't get out of the second round of consolation matches when he was lost a 2-0 decision to Palmerton's Dan Russo. Russo's tournament ended when he was pinned by Zito in his next match. Webster actually pinned Zito in just over a minute in the prelims before dropping a 7-3 decision to Jones in the quarters. Webster's tournament ended with a 4-2 loss to Catasauqua's Ryan Greene in the third round of the consolation bracket. Greene went on to finish third. Only Schmall advanced to the regional tournament from this group.138 - 1. Caleb Clymer, Northwestern, Fr. (32-10); 2. Dylan Rynkiewicz, Tamaqua, Sr. (35-3); 3. Tegan Durishin, Lehighton, Jr. (30-9).Honorable Mention - Ali Capobianco, Panther Valley, Jr. (29-14); Anthony McCue, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (16-8).Notes - Clymer vaults to the top after one of the most impressive performances of the AA tournament. The freshman earned a 12-0 major decision over Capobianco in the quarters before knocking off the top-seeded Rynkiewicz 4-2 in the semis. His most stunning result might have been in the final, when he pinned Palisades' Tyler Marsh, who was the second seed. Rynkiewicz bounced back to defeat Durishin in the third-place match. Durishin earned a 10-5 decision over Capobianco to reach the third place bout. Capobianco was a 4-0 winner over Pen Argyl's James Klinger in the fifth place match. Clymer, Rynkiewicz, Durishin and Capobianco advanced to the AA regional tournament. McCue went 0-2 in the AAA tournament, where he competed at 138 pounds, up from 132.145 - 1. Ryan Farber, Northern Lehigh, So. (35-4); 2. Hunter Davidyock, Panther Valley, Sr. (19-15); 3. David VanBlargan, Northwestern, Jr. (18-17).Honorable Mention - Tyler Dorn, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (11-9).Notes - Farber, who entered the Class AA tournament as the third seed, gave the Bulldogs their third and final title of the event. The sophomore knocked off the third seed, Reese Cornish of Notre Dame Green Pond, in the semis before getting past top seed Chase Schaeffer of Tri Valley in the final. Davidyock topped VanBlargan 5-1 in the prelims before dropping an 8-2 decision to Schaeffer in the quarters. VanBlargan lost his first round consolation match, while Davidyock was forced to forfeit his second round consi bout to Wilson's Matt Russell. Dorn went 0-2 in the AAA event. Only Farber advanced to the regional tournament from this group.152 - 1. Conrad Young, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (31-9); 2. Garrett Gouger, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (25-15); 3. Xander Kern, Panther Valley, Fr. (13-12).Honorable Mention - Zachary Glassic, Panther Valley, Sr. (14-12); Mathew Wolfe, Palmerton, Sr. (15-10).Notes - Young advanced to the Class AA final as the third seed. The junior knocked off No. 2 seed Anthony Snyder in the semis, 5-4, before falling to top seed Mike Comunale of Pius X in the final. Comunale was also named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Kern had a strong tournament as the eighth seed. The freshman won his preliminary match before getting pinned by Comunale in the quarters. Kern bounced back by winning his first two preliminary matches before getting pinned by Snyder in the fourth round of the consolation bracket. Kern's tournament ended when he was pinned by Catsauqua's Michael Shuta in the fifth place match. Gouger dropped down to 152 pounds for the AAA event, where he went 2-2, failing to advance to regionals.160 - 1. Nate Farber, Northern Lehigh, Sr. (27-10); 2. Tyler Cann, Lehighton, Jr. (21-10); 3. Trevor Dorn, Pleasant Valley, So. (20-12).Honorable Mention - Zack Christman, Palmerton, Sr. (12-7); Antonio Madera, Jim Thorpe, Jr. (6-5); Malik Roper, Tamaqua, Sr. (5-2); Grant Lorkowski, Panther Valley, Sr. (19-17).Notes - After losing to eventual champion and top seed Hunter Harner of Tri Valley in the semifinals, Farber battled back to place third, and earned an ultimate tiebreaker win over Cann along the way. Cann showed his mettle by defeating Palisades' Christian Gretzinger to take fifth. Lorkowski went 1-2 in the tournament. Dorn went 2-2 in the Class AAA event, failing to medal. Farber and Cann advanced to the regional tournament.170 - 1. Brody Keefe, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (31-6); 2. Zachary Graver, Palmerton, Sr. (19-5); 3. Austin Arnold, Northern Lehigh, Sr. (14-3).Honorable Mention - Dylan Moyer, Panther Valley, Jr. (27-13); Andrew Sorensen, Northwestern, Jr. (13-6); Tim Gergar, Palmerton, Sr. (4-4); Robbie Geisinger, Jim Thorpe, Jr. (19-12).Notes - As the second seed in the Class AA tournament, Graver advanced to the final where he lost a 5-2 decision to top seed Jason Lynch of Saucon Valley. Graver defeated Moyer 9-5 in the semifinals. After earning a 12-5 win over Geisinger in the prelims, Arnold, who was the 12th seed, lost to No. 4 seed Brady Mickatavage of North Schuylkill in the semis. But the senior bounced back in the consolation bracket, winning three straight matches, including a 3-2 decision over Moyer in the fourth round, to setup a rematch with Mickatavage for third place. Unfortunately, Mickatavage was forced to pull out, giving Arnold a forfeit win and third place. Moyer fought back to claim an 8-3 win over Sorensen for fifth place. For the second straight year, Keefe is headed to regionals after going 3-2 in the AAA event. Keefe started strong, pinning his first two opponents before running into eventual champion and top seed Matt Mirth of Southern Lehigh in the semis, where he suffered an 11-3 loss. Keefe dropped his fourth round consolation match against No. 2 seed Jake Young, who eventually finished third. Keefe got back on track in the fifth place bout, topping Bethlehem Catholic's Brandon Gallagher, 1-0. Graver, Arnold and Moyer advanced to the AA regional tournament.182 - 1. Connor Frey, Lehighton, Jr. (32-3); 2 Jarred Mooney, Palmerton, So. (24-11); 3. Chad Cederberg, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (13-12).Notes - Frey was impressive en route to his 182-pound title in the Class AA event. The junior won by fall, major decision and technical fall in his first three matches before claiming an 8-1 decision over No. 2 seed CJ Steinhilber of North Schuylkill in the final. After qualifying for the state tournament a year ago, Frey appears to be on track for a return trip to Hershey this season. Mooney, who was the third seed, placed fifth to qualify for the regional tournament. Cederberg went 1-2 and did not advance.195 - 1. Alexander Russo, Northwestern, Sr. (28-9); 2. Trent Thomas, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (27-7); 3. Rian Shubeck, Panther Valley, Sr. (24-3).Honorable Mention - John Iles, Palmerton, So. (16-15); Stephen Scheib, Northern Lehigh, Sr. (19-15).Notes - Lots of movement here this week. Russo jumps to the top after a stunning performance in the AA tournament, which included knocking off Shubeck, a state qualifier a year ago and the No. 2 seed, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Russo, who was the seventh seed, topped Palisades' Nick Bord, who was the third seed in the semis before getting pinned by top seed Alek Hummel in the final. Shubeck, who dropped down from 220 pounds for the postseason, recovered by placing third. Thomas advanced to the semis of the AAA event, before losing to top seed Thomas Alcaro of Emmaus. The junior rebounded to take fifth and advance to the regional tournament.220 - 1. Tre Nelson, Palmerton, Sr. (19-7); 2. Wyatt Clements, Lehighton, Jr. (19-12); 3. Jason Schaffer, Northern Lehigh, So. (16-16).Honorable Mention - Caleb Campbell, Jim Thorpe, So. (6-6).Notes - Nelson got by Schaffer 4-3 in the prelims before losing to Julian Wismer in the quarters. The senior then earned an ultimate tiebreaker win over Clements in the third round of the consolation bracket before falling to Catasauqua's Satchel Stauffer in the next round. Nelson bounced back by earning a 3-2 decision over North Schuylkill's Dane Tarantelli to take fifth place and advance to regionals. Schaffer also defeated Campbell in overtime during the first round of the consolation bracket.285 - 1. Ahmad Curtis, Pleasant Valley, Sr. (24-7); 2. Cameron Kates, Northern Lehigh, Jr. (36-5); 3. Jacob Murray, Northwestern, Jr. (16-13).Honorable Mention - Will Focht, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (4-3); Alexander Smith, Lehighton, Jr. (14-12).Notes - Curtis had an outstanding showing in the AAA tournament to take over the top spot. The senior advanced to the final on the strength of two pins and a 3-1 decision before he was pinned by top seed Andrew Dunn of Bethlehem Catholic. After advancing to regionals for the first time last year, it's clear Curtis is ready to take the next step this season. After losing 3-2 in overtime to Salisbury's Alex Nicholas in the AA quarterfinals, Kates got a measure of revenge against the Falcons' junior when he turned the tables and earned a 3-2 decision win in the third place match to secure his spot in the regional tournament.(compiled by Patrick Matsinko)
