Lehighton Borough puts hold on stadium

Lehighton Area School District's stadium improvements plan has been put on the sidelines until all requirements are addressed.

That comes after Lehighton Borough Council, on a unanimous decision Monday, tabled conditional approval of the stadium improvements project.Council chose to table approval until all the conditions listed on the borough engineer's letter recommended by the borough planning commission on Dec. 10 are met.In September, members of the Carbon County Planning Commission voted to recommend conditional plan rejection for the plan.Several of the conditions cited by engineer Bruce Steigerwalt have been addressed by the district. However, the district must still finalize plans with utilities. The school district has been working with Lehighton Borough, UGI, and the borough sewer and water authorities to meet all necessary requirements for the project.Plans for the estimated $5 million project call for relocating the stadium from its current location to the grounds of the high school by replacing the athletic grass field with an artificial turf field inside the existing track; constructing a visitor and home grandstand, press box, 62-foot by 260-foot field house, 42-foot by 74-foot restroom/maintenance building, a 119-vehicle paved parking lot and a 100-vehicle grass overflow lot; and installing a new lighting system for the field and paved parking areas.Contacted this morning, district Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said "contingent to meeting the revisions as requested from all parties, our goal is to continue to foster a great relationship with all the municipalities within the school district."We appreciate all their support throughout all of our projects; not just the stadium," Cleaver said. "We continue with our plans, and we will address all our concerns and meet all our requirements."In a related matter, council agreed to grant a waiver to a section of the subdivision and land development ordinance per the recommendation of the borough planning commission at their Sept. 10 meeting, as well as a waiver to a section of the SALDO that pertains to storm pipe size and slope per the recommendation of the borough planning commission at its Sept. 10 meeting.
