Bombers eliminated

CATASAUQUA - Meeting for the fourth time this season, the Salisbury and Palmerton girls knew each other enough that one would expect a close, nailbiting finish.

A poor second quarter that saw the Bombers go over five minutes without scoring a point put them down by double-digits and they never made it all the way back. The end result was a 61-47 win by the Falcons ending Palmerton's season in the District 11 Class 2A quarterfinals at Catasauqua High School Friday night. The victory propelled Salisbury into Tuesday night's semifinal against top seeded North Schuylkill. The Falcons weren't sure until game time if senior center Meagan Eripret was going to be able to play.Eripret didn't start the game, but was the first sub off the bench. She played a crucial part in keeping the Bombers from coming all the way back in the third quarter, scoring 10 of her team's 11 points. Eripret finished the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds, even though she wasn't 100 percent."She (Eripret) hasn't practiced in two weeks except for all but five minutes last night," said Salisbury head coach Joe Mladosich. "She was huge tonight. We're a better team obviously when she's in the middle underneath."The Falcons jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes forcing Palmerton head coach Rodney Strohl to call a quick timeout. It worked as the Bombers outscored the Falcons 11-2 to take a 11-9 lead. A three-pointer by Bauer put Salisbury back in front 12-11 after one.Jade Farquhar made one of two free throws for the Bombers to tie it in the first minute of the second quarter. A 15-point run by Salisbury, however, ballooned the Falcons out to a 27-12 lead.Another free throw by Farquhar with 2:24 left in the half ended the Salisbury run.Palmerton wound up scoring the last six points before intermission to cut the lead to 28-19."We left two baskets lay there on the floor at one point," Strohl said. "We had them and it was like who was going to take it? Our mindset wasn't there at times. I laid into the seniors and told them they had to go and get the ball. We didn't score in the second quarter."Even at the beginning of the game it was 7-0 and we came back on a 9-0 run. We regrouped and played well. It was the little things that we needed to do and at this time of the year if you don't do them, it comes back to haunt you."The Bombers cut it to six in the third quarter as Farquhar scored 10 of her team's 14 points as they pulled within 39-33 with eight minutes left.Bauer played determined and scored 11 of her points in the final quarter as the Falcons put it away.Bauer's game-high 25 led Salisbury and Kelly Gonoude's 15 matched Eripret. Farquhar was the only Bomber to hit double figures with 23."Lindsey (Bauer) had a real good game," said Mladosich. "She's very aggressive and goes to the basket very well and she hit some outside shots.""I thought we got off to a good start, had some trouble in the middle, then we came away well in the end."Obviously they are very good. They have some excellent outside shooters. But we hung in there, moved the ball around and got some easy shots, made some free throws and got the win."SALISBURYKeet 0-0-0-0, Gonoude 5-4-6-15, Szita 1-1-2-3, Meikrantz 1-0-2-3, Albright 0-0-0-0, Bauer 8-8-16-25, Eripret 5-5-7-15, Bucchin 0-0-0-0.
