Rottet latest Raider to reach milestone

Bo Rottet wasn't thinking about being a 1,000-point scorer throughout most of his high school career.

That was the point guard in him.But when Rottet realized at the conclusion of his junior season that the milestone was within reach, his mindset changed. That was the scorer in him.Once Rottet made it a goal, there was never really any doubt he would attain it.That was the competitor in him.Last week, the Tamaqua senior reached that goal. Rottet's 22-point explosion against Pine Grove pushed him over the 1,000-point mark for his career, making him the 12th boys basketball player in school history to achieve that milestone."Bo is a super competitive kid," said Tamaqua coach Caszy Kosciolek. "He works on his game year round and is always pushing himself to get better."He has shown tremendous offensive improvement over the course of his career. I'm not at all surprised that he achieved this."Kosciolek might not have been surprised, but Rottet said until recently he would have been."Almost everyone thinks about someday scoring 1,000 points," said Rottet. "But I didn't realistically think I had a chance until last season ended and I saw how many career points I had. That's when I made it a goal of mine instead of just a dream of mine."Rottet scored 54 points in a limited playing role as a freshman. As the starting point guard his sophomore year, he averaged just over 10 points a game, finishing the season with 246 points.Still, there was no thought about one day becoming part of a very elite club at Tamaqua High School."As a point guard, you have to have the mindset of running the offense and getting your teammates involved," explained Rottet. "That's what my main focus has always been."But the last couple of seasons, I knew that in addition to handling the typical point guard duties, I would have to step up my scoring a little bit for us to be successful. After my junior year, I realized that 1,000 points was going to be within reach if I had a strong senior season."Rottet averaged over 15 points a game last season and finished the year with 346 points. This year, Rottet's numbers are even better. He is currently averging over 17 points a game. His offensive numbers and solid all-around play have been a huge factor in Tamaqua enjoying its best regular season is decades. The Raiders current record of 19-4 is the school's most wins since the 1994-95 team won 19 games and its .826 winning percentage is the program's best since the 1982-83 team went 31-3 and reached the PIAA state final."We have a lot of really good players on this team and that makes my job as the point guard a lot easier," said Rottet. "The team is so unselfish."You look at Brett (Kosciolek) and everyone knows how great a scorer he is (1,430 career points), but people don't realize how well he passes the ball. But Brett isn't the only one, our entire team passes the ball well which has been one of the main reasons I was able to score this many points."As humble as Rottet was about reaching the milestone, his coach said that it was a well-earned achievement."Bo is a physical guard that can beat you is so many ways," said coach Kosciolek. "He can beat you off the dribble, he can finish at the basket, he can hurt you from three-point range, he can find open teammates, and he can rebound."But the biggest compliment I can give him is that he is a winner. He loves to compete and he loves to win. I think that's what makes him such a good player."It's also what helped make him the latest 1,000-point scorer at Tamaqua.
