Police: Man used fake smoke detector to film kids in cabin

A convicted sex offender has been accused of secretly filming minors while they used the bathroom at a rented cabin in Carbon County.

The alleged crimes occurred in January 2014, while the man, Kenneth Dale Schiff, was awaiting sentencing in a similar case that occurred at a campground in Middle Smithfield Township.Police say Schiff took nearly 500 video clips of his victims through a camera that was designed to look like a smoke detector. The videos allegedly showed victims under the age of 18 using the bathroom and shower. The alleged videos were taken while Schiff shared a cabin with the victims at Lake Harmony in Kidder Township. At the time of the alleged crimes, Schiff was awaiting sentencing on child porn and related charges after he allegedly used similar equipment to film victims in the showers at Otter Lake Campground in Middle Smithfield Township. He has since been sentenced to a minimum two-year sentence in state prison in that case. The victims allegedly stayed with Schiff at a cabin in Lake Harmony last January. During their stay, they notified police because they had learned about Schiff's previous arrest, and observed him acting unusually. They told police that they noticed a smoke detector in the cabin's bathroom, which is how Schiff filmed his previous victims. When police searched the cabin, the smoke detector was gone. That led them to obtain a search warrant for Schiff's home in Somerset County, New Jersey, last Jan. 16. When police searched the home, they seized the fake smoke detector as well as Schifff's laptop. It took more than a year for the Pennsylvania State Police crime lab to process the computer.Last month, police learned that it contained nearly 500 video clips of the victims using the shower and bathroom, as well as footage from a bedroom at the cabin.Schiff was charged with sexual abuse of children and child pornography, both felonies.Police said because of the similarity of his crimes, it is possible that Schiff has victimized others. Anyone who has information regarding a similar incident has been asked to call trooper Brian V. Noll of the Swiftwater Barracks at 570-839-7701.Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC
