Emergency management coordinator resigns

Following the January reorganization meeting for Washington Township, it was believed George Kern, emergency management coordinator, had not been reappointed. At the Jan. 6 meeting, supervisors said they would see if Kern wanted the position.

Kern attended the Feb. 3 meeting and said his appointment came from former Gov. Dick Thornburgh and he did not need the local appointment. He said his appointment would remain in effect until a replacement was found and appointed by the governor."I am turning in my resignation. The new person will have to attend one of two classes being offered in March and April. I saved the township over $3 million by not taking any pay," Kern said.He said it is a position without glory, and he offered to help the new person in the beginning. In addition to the 35 years he was with Washington Township, he served 25 years in Slatington until the municipality found a replacement. He said it had been a pleasure to serve the township.Supervisor Josh Friebolin thanked him for his service. The advertised ordinance to join the Municipal Recreation Authority was rescinded because it had the word "Walnutport" in it. Discussions will continue.Resident Troy Markell wanted clarification about the ordinance forbidding unregistered, unlicensed and uninspected cars from being parked on streets. The zoning officer can tag, warn or tow vehicles, Friebolin said, adding it is one of Emerald's biggest problems because there is not enough parking for legal vehicles.Markell said he filed a complaint five months ago about vehicles blocking the drive at St. Peters Church. Friebolin said he would bring it up to the zoning officer.Markell wondered if it would take five months before he was asked to move his vehicles since it is five months since he filed the complaint."You have conflicting rules, one for the church and one for the rest of the town. Why are we being treated differently," he asked."Your permitted use is as a church, not as a distribution center," Friebolin said. St. Peters stores food and distributes it to various food pantries.Markell was prevented from further questioning because solicitor John Ashley said his three minutes for public comment were up.Financial reports were received from the Slatedale Athletic Association, and the annual $500 contribution to the association was released. The Sanctuary at Haffsville was named for animal control. Friebolin said they did an excellent job. There is a cap of $600 for a year's service. The following junkyard licenses were renewed: Clay Sauerwine, Kathy Jones, Anthony and Victor Hanna, Jack Follweiler and Craig Yeanish. There is a fee of $50.Friedens Fire Chief Joel Merkel said during the heavy snowstorm two firetrucks were stuck on Smith Hill Road and an ambulance could not get through. Roadmaster Tom Dengler came to their aid.Resident Ed Ziegler said the flag is still flying but with no light, which is required at night. Supervisor Gerry Phillips said he had cleared the snow away and did not understand why the light was not showing.
