Black ice causes one-vehicle crash in Nesquehoning

A Nesquehoning man was injured following a one-vehicle crash in Nesquehoning on Sunday morning.

According to borough Police Chief Sean Smith, the crash occurred just before 7:30 a.m. along Route 209 between Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe. The highway was closed until the scene was clear.On the way to the scene, Smith noted sections of the road were covered in black ice so he advised emergency crews to proceed with caution.There were skid marks from the berm of the northbound lane into and across the southbound lane of travel from a silver 2014 Hyundai Elantra, owned by Enterprise Car Rental of Lehighton, and driven by Aaron Walck.Smith approached the driver, who was later identified as Walck, and asked if he was OK. Walck appeared to be in major pain and responded, "My whole body."All airbags were deployed in the vehicle and the driver had been wearing a seat belt.When asked how fast he was traveling, Walck responded that he was going 70 mph when he lost control. Walck was then treated at the scene by emergency personnel.The car had severe damage to the front and rear portions. Walck had been extricated by ambulance personnel and was then transported to St. Luke's Miners Hospital-Coaldale campus, for further treatment.According to the investigation, Walck's vehicle was traveling north when he lost control, skidding 70 feet before crossing lanes, striking the guardrail, spinning approximately 160 degrees, crossing back into the northbound lane and entering the woods, striking a tree before coming to rest in the woods.The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation was notified about the guardrails, as well as the slippery road conditions. Nesquehoning Hose Company and New Columbus fire departments, as well as Nesquehoning Police stayed on scene until the road was salted. Marouchoc's Auto towed the vehicle.Route 209 reopened at 9 a.m.Walck is being cited in the incident.
