The late Michael D. Kravelk honored by Nesquehoning

Saturday is Michael D. "Nunny" Kravelk day in Nesquehoning.

On Wednesday evening, Nesquehoning Borough Council adopted the day in honor of Kravelk, a borough volunteer firefighter who passed away Sept. 28, 2014.Kravelk was one of three deceased volunteer firefighters honored for their dedication to their community.David Hawk, president of borough council, presented Kravelk's widow, Connie, with a resolution honoring her husband.Kravelk was a former mayor and councilman for Nesquehoning.He volunteered with the Nesquehoning Ambulance Corps and Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1, and also served as a fire commissioner for the borough for 15 years.In addition to his volunteering with emergency services, Kravelk also was a former member and past president of the Carbon County Tele-Communications Commission, the Nesquehoning Recreation Complex Commission and the Panther Valley Softball League.He served as a coach for the Nesquehoning Little League and Babe Ruth; and was a member of the Nesquehoning Sokol Citizens Club.Hawk read the resolution, saying "We, the members of the Nesquehoning Borough Council, express our gratitude and appreciation of his life and career, of the value of his example, of his fine character, of his exemplary life and of his untiring zeal for the welfare of his wife and family, this Board and his neighbors and community and that we honor his memory by working to reach the shining example he left for us all."Kravelk is survived by his wife; a daughter Lisa McCullion and her husband, Lt. Col. Dwayne McCullion; a brother, Jim Kravelk and wife Donna; a sister, Barbara Hrebik and husband Eugene Hrebik; and three grandchildren, Patrick, Keely and Conner McCullion.
