Car likely drove off turnpike

The turnpike state police as well as Franklin Township police are investigating a crash in which a car came off the southbound lanes of the turnpike, landing on Pohopoco Drive in Franklin Township.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, motorists traveling the turnpike reported seeing a pedestrian walking along the roadway with what appeared be a gash on the head. State police at the Pocono barracks were unable to locate the pedestrian or any car.On Saturday morning workers constructing a new bridge over Pohopoco Drive found a car in the middle of the construction site. The car had apparently come off the turnpike. It appears the driver was traveling south and failed to enter the "cattle chute" in the southbound lanes of the construction site and instead entered the construction lane. That lane ends abruptly with a sheer drop of more than 20 feet. Since there were no marks in the snow or any property damaged, it is thought the car went airborne, landing on Pohopoco Drive. The operator of the car was later identified as Ajay Singh, 40, of Allentown. Troopers said a passing motorist took him to Allentown and he later was taken to St. Luke's University Hospital-Bethlehem, for treatment of moderate injuries. The scene of the crash is about a half-mile north of the Mahoning Interchange.
